Position Description

Longy School of Music of Bard College seeks qualified candidates for a part-time faculty position in our fully online Master of Music in Music Education program. This degree program, which can be completed in one or two years, builds on Longy's near-decade of expertise in preparing musicians to be teachers through its campus-based degree programs, including the one-year MM/ME degree offered in Cambridge, MA. Designed to be accessible to any music educator, anywhere, the Online MM/ME fuses music education with social change, culturally relevant teaching practices, and student agency. All faculty in this program will teach asynchronously to a global adult student population using Longy's learning management system.

Longy seeks faculty who demonstrate the commitment to preparing music educators to be transformative leaders wherever they teach, and who have the technical savvy to design and teach online in inspirational ways. Longy seeks candidates who are adept at responding to the needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds in a multicultural environment. Top candidates are imaginative about using online formats in new ways to encourage student engagement and active participation. Faculty will have expertise in current music education pedagogy as it relates teaching social and emotional learning in the trauma-informed music classroom.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop one asynchronous, online music teacher education course about trauma-informed practices and social and emotional learning for delivery, including weekly asynchronous formative and summative assignments, discussion posts, blog posts.

  • Use Longy's learning management system to post syllabus, assignments and other materials, and communicate with students.

  • Facilitate asynchronous, online learning, including leading and moderating online discussions of course material via discussion posts and web chats.

  • Host one weekly Zoom course meeting each week for students.

  • Evaluate and select texts and instructional materials.

  • Create and record instructional lectures and videos that will be posted within assigned coursework for asynchronous student access.

  • Participate in professional development seminars pertaining to online course development and delivery.

  • Submit developed online courses for review and approval to the Program Director.

  • Evaluate student papers, projects, tests and other assessments.

  • Edit and refresh course content as needed, to adapt with development of new technologies and software.

  • Participate in weekly scheduled online virtual office hours with students.

  • Respond to student inquiries in a timely manner (within 24 hours).

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Excellent computer skills and facility with multiple types of operating systems, peripheral accessories, and software programs; familiarity with Brightspace learning management system is a plus.

  • Ability to deliver course outcomes and content asynchronously through a variety of teaching/learning styles

  • Respect for students and a genuine interest in their learning.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Good organizational skills and timeliness in responding to student inquiries.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with students and colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Music Education, or a related field preferred

  • Prior teaching experience in a graduate or undergraduate program or corporate training program, particularly to adult students, is preferred

  • Prior experience teaching in a fully online setting with evidence of positive student outcomes.
