The Oncology Information Specialist is a non-patient care position responsible for collecting and coding outcomes data for cancer patients based on review and analysis of patient records in accordance with accreditation and coding standards and facility needs. The Oncology Information Specialist acts as the Tumor Board software administrator and department liaison, assisting in the coordination and documentation of Tumor Board meetings. The person in this role may also assist in the abstraction of non-analytic cancer cases as needed.
Essential Functions:
Complies with Joint Commission, HIPAA, and Frederick Health regulations for confidentiality. Complies with Maryland Health Department, American College of Surgeons, SEER and NAACCR data collection and coding standards and edit sets.

Follow-up: Reviews electronic medical records including Meditech, Aria, and CRISP HIE for relevant information, sends letters, makes phone calls, and performs additional activities in regards to follow-up on a case. Analyzes the information obtained to code current patient and disease status into the registry database accurately. Records all other required follow-up data items as required. Maintains minimum follow-up rates as required by CoC.
Abstract: May complete abstracts on non-analytic cases under direct supervision of a credentialed ODS-C in accordance with current state cancer reporting laws and internal facility needs.
Collects, prepares and maintains cancer registry statistical reports and logs within required guidelines and/or timeliness.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
Experience in cancer services, medical records, or similar office setting performing high volume, complex and detailed assignments.
Familiarity with health records and record keeping systems
Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy & physiology with particular knowledge related to cancer and its treatment.
Previous exposure to or knowledge of cancer registry activities preferred, but not required.
PC experience; ability to use computer terminal for prolonged periods to review and enter data
Working knowledge of MS office applications, online meeting software, and shared files
Strong ability to navigate the internet and conduct effective internet searches
Ability to work under time constraints
Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to interact professionally with physicians, facility departments, outside facilities, medical offices and organizations.
Good decision-making and problem-solving skills
Ability to read and comprehend cancer-related diagnosis and treatment information
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Minimum of AA Degree or equivalent required.

Lifting up to 15 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes). While work is mostly done sitting, a certain amount of walking or standing is often necessary.

Repetition: Repeating the same motion over and over again places stress on the muscles and tendons. The severity of risk depends on how often the action is repeated, the speed of the movement, the required force and muscle involved
Mental/Visual Fatigue: Due to constant/frequent and careful review of medical records.
Working Conditions:
Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Risk Category C - NO exposure to blood or body fluids.
May be required to travel to other locations (i.e. hospital main campus, hospital off-campus facilities, physician offices, etc.)
