MAIN FUNCTION:
The Oncology Clinical Pharmacist provides oncology pharmacy services to ambulatory and inpatient oncology patients. This includes the verification of provider medication and chemotherapy orders; modification of orders; biosimilar conversions with prior authorization; verification; entering non-chemotherapy orders; oversight of the pharmacy technicians; optimizing drug therapy by identifying, resolving, and preventing drug related problems; counseling patients; and providing drug information as needed. This position works closely with oncologists and nursing staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Identify, implement, and coordinate quality improvement and continuing education activities within specialty area. When necessary, act as the designated IV Room Manager and/or be responsible for the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Program for sterile compounding.
Provide specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes including, but not limited to, advising physicians on issues concerning drug therapy, the inherent toxicity of drugs and their side effects, as well as the recommendation of appropriate doses.
Maintain liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff; provide timely information pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage and compatibility, state and federal regulations regarding drug controls, and Joint Commission Standards.
Conduct and evaluate medication histories, assess compliance, and suggest modifications so as to achieve desired outcomes. Instruct patients in the proper use of prescribed drugs and make Multidisciplinary Rounds with physicians as necessary to evaluate patient progress.
Individualize medication regimens using sound principles, accounting for pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic variations in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination with responsibility for establishing and continually improving the delivery of Pharmaceutical Care to patients within areas of direct responsibility and assisting others in the department with the same.
Work with the Director, Pharmacy to enhance pharmaceutical services by identifying and implementing new clinical services provided by the Department of Pharmaceutical Services.
Precept clinical pharmacy students.
Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, quality improvement program, safety, compliance, and environmental standards.
Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences, or in-services to stay abreast of current trends.
Attend meetings as required.
Perform other functions/duties as requested.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
BS Pharmacy Degree required; Doctor of Pharmacy preferred
5 years of hospital/ambulatory clinic experience with at least two years of oncology experience preferred
Board certification (BCOP) or completion of PGY-2 Oncology Residency preferred
Current registration as a Registered Pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or eligibility to obtain licensure required
Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, motivated, and capable of supervising supporting personnel required
Demonstrated effective communication skills required
