Mission or Goal of Unit: Pursue the Research, Clinical, and Education Missions of the academic medical center in the areas of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care.

Through bench research, clinical trials and the rigorous study of prevention and control, our scientists pursue the many roles of medicine in treating, preventing and controlling the adverse effects of cancer. Our hallmark activity is translational research, where our physicians and scientists work to bring laboratory discoveries to the patient bedside as quickly and safely as possible. Through our training programs, our faculty train the next generation of scientists and physicians to further advance science and practice.

Chief Purpose of this position: The VCU School of Medicine Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care and Massey Cancer Center are seeking an Oncologist - Clinical Investigator with a clinical focus in sarcoma and malignant melanoma to practice at our flagship and satellite locations. This position will have a role in advancing the clinical research mission and will be expected to work collaboratively with other members of the Massey Cancer Center.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching | Trains medical students, residents and fellows in the lab and while in the clinic. Expected to actively participate in providing clinical research opportunities to fellows.

Research | Develops clinical trial protocols and complies with all regulatory requirements. Develops and initiates investigator-initiated trials.

Works collaboratively with laboratory-investigators to translate laboratory findings into new treatments for cancer. Writes and submits grant applications during the course of the academic year. Writes and publishes multiple manuscripts during the course of an academic year.

Serves as an investigator on funded grants, NCCTN and ETCTN trials. Serves as a PI or Co-investigator on peer-reviewed grants and is responsible for complying with all institution and sponsors terms and conditions for grant funding. Ensures resources are utilized optimally for advancing the clinical research program.

Participates in Massey Cancer Center Core Grant and CTSA applications and site visits as requested. Participates and engages other members of the Massey Cancer Center and the Department of Internal Medicine in collaborative research projects. Stays up to date on the clinical trial menu offered through the Massey Cancer Center and educates patients on their options for treatment on clinical trials.

Clinical | Attends on the inpatient wards and consult service, and/or sees patients in the outpatient clinic with a focus on sarcoma and melanoma. Total clinical effort is ~ 75%.

Required Qualifications:

  • Board certified or eligible in medical oncology or hematology

  • Eligible for Virginia licensure

  • Clear evidence of accomplishment/potential (e.g. - publications) during medical school, residency, fellowship, and/or early academic career

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seasoned cancer specialist who possesses national and/or international recognition in the clinical and research disciplines of cancer
