The City of Soldotna is recruiting for an On-call Library Clerk I

This position is open until filled with a first review of applications on June 18th 2024.

Under general supervision, performs a variety of paraprofessional work that may be assigned to one or more areas of library operations of the Joyce K. Carver Memorial Soldotna Public Library including circulation, youth and adult services, reference, technical processing, and literacy services. Assignments entail substantial amounts of customer service, data entry, and retrieval. The Library Clerk I is the entry level in the library paraprofessional series.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule Monday - Saturday, including evenings and weekends.

  • Participates in primary library operations that may include, but not be limited to: circulation, youth and adult services, community outreach, reference and reader's advisory, collection development, and technical processing.

  • Assists patrons in making effective use of library facilities, programs, services, equipment, collections, and online resources.

  • Performs general clerical duties such as monitoring and replenishing supplies, printing documents, preparing mail and transits, and keeping accurate patron records.

  • Processes new library materials for circulation.

  • Assesses and repairs damaged library materials.

  • Operates and maintains standard office equipment such as copy machines, cash registers, and computers.

  • Assists with planning and implementing library events, including publicity preparation and distribution. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic library services, practices and terminology.

  • Customer service methods, practices and procedures.

  • Books, authors and subject genres, reference and research sources and resources.

  • Library automation, computer software and equipment, mobile devices, and eReaders.

  • Standard software applications such as word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Standard print and online tools to promote library programs, services, and collections.

Ability to:

  • Interact positively with a wide variety of patrons in a busy environment.

  • Communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and via standard and online promotional tools

  • Use initiative and independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

  • Effectively utilize library collections, systems and equipment and train patrons in usage.

  • Enter and retrieve data with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform assigned work.

  • Accurately perform basic math. For example, addition and subtraction when counting cash.

  • Sort and organize materials by the Dewey Decimal System in alphabetical, numerical, and topical order and attend to detail to ensure accuracy.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required, and a Bachelor's degree is desired.

  • A minimum of two years customer service experience is required.  Six months library work experience or frontline customer service experience is preferred.

  • A graduate degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association may be substituted for the above experience requirements.

  • The ability to type is required. The ability to type at least 45 words per minute is desired.

  • Employee must have a valid Alaska driver license.   Must have and maintain a good driving record.

Working Environment: 

Work is performed in an open office setting.

Physical Demands:

Performs a wide range of physical motions, which may include routine and repetitive bending, stooping, reaching and pushing, moving and carrying library materials. Must be able to repeatedly lift books weighing between 1 and 10 pounds, including overhead lifting, and to push book trucks weighing excess of 50 pounds.  The employee will also be required to move tables and chairs to set up for meetings, and lift or move boxes up to 35 lbs.
