The Merchandise Planning organization is responsible for the strategic planning of inventory positions to drive sales, manage inventory turn, and deliver profit objectives. Inventory leaders are innovators, optimizers and problem solvers who are constantly seeking opportunities to move the business forward. The team is currently undergoing training and implementation on an exciting new software suite to allow better management of all inventory metrics and critical in this role is adoption to the system to scale the Brand. We seek a candidate who loves using data to tell the story and a team player who goes above and beyond. The role is within one of the most complex and high-visibility categories, offering exposure to leadership and opportunity to have a big impact. The successful candidate will be curious, motivated and will think outside the box, challenging the status quo.

Essential Functions:

Plan and manage a department through the entire product life cycle:

  • Create pre-season plans

  • Present plans at investment review

  • Manage monthly open to buy forecasts to drive sales and margin

  • Manage inventory levels and turn targets

  • Forecast and review buys and replenishment by sku to maintain optimum inventory flow

  • Utilize the new planning software to forecast sales and manage replenishment

  • Partner with the Inventory Distribution team to develop allocation strategies and with E-commerce team on site merchandising opportunities

  • Identify potential inventory liabilities and take action to maintain inventory targets

Key in this role:

  • Build a team relationship with Merchant counterparts and partner to develop financial merchandise plans by department

  • Identify opportunities to drive the top line

  • The ability to analyze the business day to day through reading and reacting to trends, and communicate actions to take

  • Develop and provide appropriate business analysis to influence purchases and assortment strategies

  • Be an integral partner with Visual, Store Operations, Sourcing, and the Distributions Centers

  • Act like an owner, being the expert on everything relating to the sales, inventory and margin of your department

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years planning and distribution experience

  • Strong business acumen, financial analysis, and technical skills

  • Ability to work in a fast paced entrepreneurial environment

  • Superior written, communication, presentation, and listening skills

Assistant Planners are responsible for planning and managing a small category of business within one of our divisions: furniture, textiles, decorative accessories, or lighting. They are responsible for forecasting sales, margin and inventory from the department level to the SKU level. In effort to maximize appropriate in-stock levels, daily activities include monitoring inventory levels by SKU, placing reorders, proposing sales plans to drive sales, transferring inventory between Retail and DTC. The Assistant Planner creates SKU level plans at the season level and then closely monitors sales, margin, and inventory to maximize opportunities throughout the year. They also forecast sales and margin at a top line perspective, analyzing weekly sales and margin trends. In addition, assistant planners generate in-stock reports and various other reports for their division. Analytical thinking, communication, cross function partnerships, curiosity, and time management are key success factors for this role and all planning roles at west elm. Essential Functions: * Responsible for running and analyzing weekly and ad hoc reporting. * Maintain appropriate inventory levels and partner w/cross functional partners to ensure on-time delivery of newness through the in-stock report. * Plan and manage an area of responsibility through entire product life cycle; including creating pre-season plans, presenting plans during investment review, and managing monthly open to buy. * Build a team relationship with cross-functional business partners. * Partner with Merchants and Allocation for store stocking and tier strategies. * Independently manage Monday morning reporting, ad hoc reporting, backorder notifications, linking, re-forecasting, and Retail and DTC (OMNI) planning tool SKU management including roll-over SKU's. * Maintain appropriate inventory levels and partner w/cross functional partners to ensure on-time delivery of newness through the in-stock report. * Plan and manage an area of responsibility through entire product life cycle; including creating pre-season plans, presenting plans during investment review, and managing monthly open to buy. * Build a team relationship with cross-functional business partners. * Assist in the resolution of customer service and inventory issues. * Partner with Merchants, Retail distribution planners, and Ecommerce to ensure prominently featured collections have proper on hand and on order inventory.
