Veolia is seeking an Operations & Maintenance Technician Trainee in Wilmington, DE. The O&M Tech Trainee performs entry level operation and maintenance functions at Wastewater production and related facilities. Work performed includes basic plant operation and mechanical duties with support functions in other areas including electrical work and analytical duties. Work is performed in a team environment.

Schedule: 6 AM to 2 PM, with as needed on-call and weekend work

Specific job duties include the following:

  • Ability to learn to perform the following skills as a Trainee by working with experienced operators and maintenance personnel

  • Assists with daily inspections of mechanical equipment.

  • Assists in maintenance and minor repairs on pumps.

  • Assists in maintenance and minor repairs on valves.

  • Assists with changes belts, pulleys, bearings, valves, and sprockets

  • Checks oil levels and adds the proper lubricant when needed.

  • Makes entries in maintenance records, both in electronic and hard copy system.

  • Opens and closes valves and switches as directed by other operations personnel to start and shut down equipment.

  • Performs cleanup and housekeeping tasks for work area

  • Ability to learn to perform the following skills as a Trainee by working with experienced operators and maintenance personnel

  • Assists electrician in maintenance & repair of electrical equipment.

  • Some knowledge of methods and techniques for installing, maintaining and repairing plant electrical systems.

  • Knowledge and ability to open and close 110 155V electrical panels and fuse boxes.

  • Installs and repairs electrical receptacles and simple switched devices.

  • Graduation from high school. One year of experience in a technical field.

  • Fundamental computer skills enabling access to plant operations programs.

  • Must have and maintain valid drivers license

  • Some knowledge of environmental effects of water pollution and of basic physical, biological and chemical wastewater treatment processes.

  • Some knowledge of legal/regulatory requirements & standards.

  • Some skill taking accurate measurements & keeping clear & organized records.

  • Some skill in using computers.

  • Basic math skills

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques, scientific aptitude

  • Understanding of metric system

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory glassware, capable of measuring accurately with pipette, graduated cylinder etc

  • Understanding of predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on equipment and facilities

  • Some knowledge of lubricating, maintaining and adjusting equipment.

  • Some knowledge of methods, materials, tools, techniques used in repair of equipment.

  • Some skill in basic mechanics.

  • Some skill in use & operation of hand, power tools & machinery used in plant maintenance.

  • Some knowledge of public utility operations and equipment used in support of such operations.

  • Some knowledge of motorized equipment, sufficient to detect operational problems.

  • Some skill in making minor repairs and adjusting equipment.

  • Some knowledge of basic electrical repair and replacement

  • Ability to learn to perform the following functions by working with experienced operators and maintenance personnel

  • Changes charts, pens and related equipment and panel bulbs.

  • Prepares units and equipment for shipment to vendor.

  • Changes and cleans probes, magnetic strips, floats and sensors.

  • Knowledge of HOA (Hand Off Auto) operational controls and how these settings apply to the operational control scheme.

  • To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents must be able to perform the following: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions. Heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Maintain composure in emergency and non-emergency situations. Exercise sound judgment and decision-making. Observe physical and environmental surroundings and changing conditions. Understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Work on multiple tasks simultaneously. Sense of direction.

  • Attention to detail. Flexibility and adaptability to changing events and circumstances. Capacity and initiative to learn new operating systems, equipment and procedures.

  • Ability to understand and follow all safety requirements.

  • Ability to concisely document information on work orders.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing

  • Work is performed inside 30% of the time and outside 70% of the time. May be required to work night shifts and weekends. There is exposure to noise from moving equipment such as machinery and vehicles, to clutter and/or slippery floors, to elevated surfaces such as high-step vehicles and platforms, to poor lighting when performing night inspections, to fumes from sewage, to sludge to diesel fuel, vehicle exhaust and to cleaning chemicals. There is regular exposure, weather dependent, to extreme heat or extreme cold, to humidity or wet conditions, to snow and ice.
