Job Description and Duties

The Office Technician

  • Typing (OT-T) is the advanced journey level which regularly performs a variety of the most difficult duties and is expected to consistently exercise a high degree of initiative, independence and originality in performing assigned tasks.

Under general supervision of the designated, the OT-T provides independent secretarial services in the unit. Follow oral and written directions, evaluate situations accurately and take effective action; make clear and comprehensive reports and maintain records; apply specific rules and office policies and procedures as they pertain to the area. This classification communicates effectively, and exercises a high degree of initiative, independence, and originality in performing the assigned tasks.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Limited Term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Kern Valley State Prison is currently canvassing for the Office Technician (Typing) classification.

This recruitment may be used to fill any additional Limited Term/Full-Time vacancies in this classification that may occur during the life of the certification list.

All hires are subject to Hiring Freeze and/or Budget Approval. This position will be filled with established hiring restrictions and may require the position to be filled on a Limited Term basis with the possibility of being extended and/or becoming Permanent/Full-Time.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) the ability to type at a minimum speed as designated on the Class Specifications (link available in the additional documentation section). You must obtain a valid typing certificate confirming your ability to meet the minimum typing speed, prior to being hired. Additional information regarding acceptable typing tests is available at the CalCareers.ca.gov website.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined a candidate does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.

Candidates new to CDCR are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department testing on an annual basis thereafter.

Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility (please attach your letter, if available). SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority; therefore, individuals with other eligibility may be considered in the event no SROA or Surplus candidates apply. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Typing Certificate Information

A typing certification is required when applicants apply for State civil service clerical positions such as Office Assistant (Typing) and Office Technician (Typing). The specific typing requirement will be noted in the Class Specification.

State departments will honor typing certificates issued within the last four years, and certified from a five (5) minute typing test that meets the CalHR requirements, with a minimum of 40 WPM (words per minute).

Acceptable Certificates

The California Department of Human Resources has approved certificates from the following entities:

  • Any State Agency/Department (the Agency/Department that you are applying to may also give you a typing test)

Unacceptable Certificates

Typing certificates issued by the Internet or Employment Agencies, and Typing Certificates issued for a typing test under five (5) minutes are not acceptable.
