The Workers' Compensation Board currently has a vacancy for a 40-hour per week Office Specialist II position in the Augusta Central Office.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is part of the Board's Claims Management Unit and will have an assigned caseload of insurers, third party administrators and self-insureds. The position will act as the Claims Management Unit technical lead directly handling complex issues and coordinating and overseeing technical work of the Claims Management Unit staff. This position will verify the completeness and accuracy of information, data and calculations submitted to the Board for payment of lost-time, contesting claims for benefits, initiating litigation and recording settlement of individual cases. This position will assist the Claims Management Unit manager and supervisor to implement internal processes and policies. The position also answers questions about Workers' Compensation benefits.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS

  • Review and process a variety of forms filed with the Board for payment of benefits to injured workers, checking for completeness and accuracy, identifying errors, applying the correct rules and statutory requirements depending on the date of injury, and calculating and/or verifying rates as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to claims managers, adjusters, claims representatives, attorneys and WCB staff for completion and filing of Board forms.
  • Analyze and distribute error reports to claim administrators.
  • Liaise between manager and internal and external sources on key matters.

KNOWLEGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of workers' compensation laws, rules, procedures and forms.
  • Knowledge of the Board's dispute resolution process.
  • Knowledge of state and Board rules regarding confidentiality of personal information.
  • Ability to compose, review, and edit complex and/or technical business correspondence.
  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in dispensing information.
  • Ability to initiate, coordinate, implement, and evaluate administrative activities.
  • Ability to analyze solutions, reach logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations.
  • Ability to understand and promote management goals as they affect day-to-day and long-term operations.
  • Ability to effectively plan and adjust work operations to meet planned and unexpected change.
  • Ability to make decisions on complex administrative matters.
  • Ability to receive, screen and give information while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to accurately interpret applicable laws, administrative and Law Court decisions and apply them correctly to different dates of injury.
  • Ability to identify, retrieve, analyze and evaluate data from the Board's case management system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations and formulas and to use Excel spreadsheets to accurately verify calculations submitted to the Board.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of professionals and the public, identify applicable rules and laws, and explain their application to specific instances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training, education, or experience in administrative support work that demonstrates 1) competency in applying a proficient knowledge of modern office practices to perform advanced administrative support tasks at the statewide level that are broad in scope or functionally diverse, and 2) the ability to use independent judgment, initiative, and decision making on complex administrative matters. All positions in this classification assume the qualifications of: Office Assistant I, Office Assistant II, Office Associate I, Office Associate II and Office Specialist I.
