WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

This position is responsible for assisting the public and clerical support for "D" Detachment including but not limited to answering all non-emergency incoming business lines, greeting the public, extensive report processing to include criminal history requests and processing Sex Offender Registration forms. This OA2 position is the first point of contact with the general public and requires exceptional customer service abilities and organizational skills.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

This position is located in the Fairbanks AST Headquarter's building, at 1979 Peger Road. A successful candidate will need to be comfortable working with a diverse population.

The in-person public contact occurs between a glass barrier. The work environment consists of a high-performance team and as such we seek someone with solid judgement, objective reasoning, excellent organization skills and someone who enjoys challenges.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Core function of this position:  Works under the Operations Supervisor. The Operations Unit is responsible for all customer service functions and clerical support for the detachment.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations: and is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.

  • Experience working with and maintaining the integrity of confidential/sensitive information.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and the ability to perform accurate and detailed work.

  • Considerable customer service experience and knowledge within a police agency, along with skills in establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with others.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) and related business/office software to accomplish work duties.

  • Team Building: Inspires and fosters team commitment, spirit, pride, and trust. Facilitates cooperation and motivates team members to accomplish goals.

High school diploma or the equivalent.

AND

One year of experience that includes clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

Substitution:

Education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience; 150 hours of vocation education equal one month of experience).

Special Note: 

"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a G.E.D.; 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years and includes basic clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

Some positions in this class may require the incumbent to operate motor vehicles. Such positions require that the applicant possess a regular driver's license and be 18 years of age or older.

Some position in this class may require skill in typing. Recruitment and selection may include this requirement.

AT TIME OF INTERVIEW:

At time of interview, applicants must provide:

  • If available, two (2) of your most recent performance evaluations.

  • Three (3) professional references with current phone numbers, at least one (1) must be from a current supervisor. 

  • A copy of academic transcripts (unofficial are okay, please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcripts) to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications.

CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT:

The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.

ALASKA PUBLIC SAFETY INFORMATION NETWORK

This position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, a security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application or security clearance.

BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
