The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Office Assistant 1 in for the Anchorage Correctional Center (ACC) located in Anchorage, Alaska.

What you will be doing:

Provide support to the on-duty shift staff in the Booking Office by performing a variety of duties including data entry and retrieval, phone support, creation of the daily in-custody court list, disseminate pertinent information to Public, Courts and other law enforcement agencies, filing, copying and faxing of documents. This position requires an extensive knowledge of policies and working standards of a correctional booking office.

Process in inmates that come to jail. Input all computer data by questioning the inmates to confirm demographic information.

Relay bail and release conditions to inmate. Occasionally assist with inmate photos. Confirm that all incoming paperwork is correct and fix errors through various avenues.

This position is a standard Office Assistant 1 in which the incumbent will learn the full range of duties involving the use of multi-line phones, screening visits, cash handling, balancing a till, distributing mail, and screening mail. Though an entry-level position, there is room for growth as an Office Assistant II and Office Assistant III. The duty hours are Week on / Week off 75-hour work week, 0600-1800, with an hour lunch with the shift. (Six of 11-hour days and One 9-hour day) Would work 3 months of days and 3 months of nights (1800-0600).

The working environment you can expect:

The booking area is located inside secured area of the Anchorage Correctional Complex. In the Booking Office there may be up to 30 individuals waiting to be booked in or making their phone call.

Answer their questions about bail, take photos and help gather clothes for offenders. Keep an eye on inmate behavior while in the day room. Explain to them how to use the phone system and occasionally go through their property to get out cell phones so they can gather numbers or get their wallets for credit cards to use for bail. Assist in handing inmates their clothes to get dressed upon release.

We are looking for someone with the following skills and abilities:

  • Strong customer service skills with experience in clerical functions.

  • Experience in computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Experience in data entry.

  • Punctual, dependable, and reliable; and

  • Enthusiasm for your job.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or G.E.D

OR

Acceptance in full standing by an accredited college (this includes acceptance in a concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment program).

OR

A Career Readiness Certificate with ACT WorkKeys scores of skill level 3 or higher in: Graphic Literacy (formerly Locating Information), Applied Math, and Workplace Documents (formerly Reading for Information).

ACT WorkKeys skill testing and career readiness certification is available at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Alaska Job Centers.

"Acceptance in full standing" means acceptance to a post-secondary program by a college or university and does not require enrollment or participation in the program. This includes acceptance in a program offering college credits while in high school, or both high school and college credits, but does not include taking advanced placement courses in high school.

Some positions in this class require the incumbent operate a State vehicle. Such positions require the selected candidate possess a valid driver's license and be 18 years of age or older on or before the first day of employment.

Education completed in foreign colleges, universities, or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution or high school.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

WORK EXPERIENCE

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS

Please be aware - this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
