The Off-Shift Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who functions as both an administrative and clinical leader to ensure patient- focused care consistent with the hospital mission, department goals, policies, protocols & procedures, regulatory requirements, and established standards of practice. The primary responsibilities include the coordination, direct supervision, and evaluation of personnel and nursing care, as well as management of fiscal and other resources during off-shifts, weekends and holidays.

  • Requires graduation from an accredited baccalaureate nursing program; MSN preferred.

  • (Current BMC employees with demonstrated commitment and subject area expertise may be considered with an Associates in Nursing with approval).

  • Requires license to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • Work requires basic cardiac life support certification; ACLS preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in recent clinical nursing practice with 3 -5 years of progressively responsible leadership experience. Previous management ability preferred.

  • Requires analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues, manage budgets, supervise staff and conduct quality improvement projects.

  • Must have excellent organizational skill to appropriately set priorities and efficiently complete work.

  • Advanced verbal interpersonal and writing skills in order to perform required leadership duties.

  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access and enter data from computerized information systems.

  • Work requires physical ability to perform core job responsibilities in accordance with the setting demands for patient populations regularly served.

The Nurse Manager provides leadership to coordinate patient flow, assess critical solutions and initiate contingency plans. In addition, the Nurse Manager is responsible for providing the leadership and management of the human, financial and material resources at BMC in relation to patient flow to support the priorities, strategic plans, organizational initiatives, goals, policies and vision of the Hospital ensuring delivery and implementation in an effective and efficient manner. The Nurse Manager will lead the Off shift Nurse Managers. The Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who will partner with Administrative and Clinical Leadership to ensure patient- focused care consistent with the hospital mission, department goals, policies, protocols & procedures, regulatory requirements, and established standards of practice. In collaboration with members of the health care team ensures coordination of patient care through the development and use of patient care and practice standards. Ensures that desired patient outcomes are optimally achieved and that variances from established parameters are evaluated and addressed as necessary. Reports directly to the Department Director, and the Director of Nursing for supervision of professional nursing practice. Patient Throughput * Collaborates with Clinical and Administrative leadership to promote seamless patient flow throughout all areas of the organization * Coordinates bed flow huddles as needed and implements tools to enable a centralized information base * Promotes the implementation of efficient and effective practices and processes to ensure smooth patient flow * Analyzes utilization data, identifies trends that curtail timely discharges and finds solutions for improving patient flow though the continuum of care * Facilitates patient placement and optimal bed utilization through optimal use of available tools * Facilitates communication of patients' needs and bed availability within the hospital and between patient care areas * Collaborates with admitting leadership and staff regarding the placement of patients * Supports ED and Inpatient units to establish patient flow processes * Collaborates with physician leaders and nursing units to resolve patient flow issues and develops and implements strategies and process improvements that will reduce bed turnover time and incidence of idle beds * Serves as the liaison for the EPIC development for Grand Central * Develops and implements tools to communicate and manage patient flow in the organization * Provides leadership and support within department for resolution of nursing specific issues at the Department/Center of Excellence Level * Actively evaluates own practice using feedback from others * Supports management in patient centered care and continuous quality improvement * Facilitates effective communication and decision making by front-line staff * Uses excellent conflict management skills * Utilizes theory and research as a basis for clinical and administrative decisions * Acts as a coach, mentor and role model to staff and peers * Identifies hospital-wide systemic issues and works with others to develop solutions * Identifies system issues within the organization and assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures, which address these issues * Collects and correlates statistical patient activity data Patient Care Organization * Collaborates in the development of the philosophy, goals, objectives and programs of the Nursing Department * Promotes and supports collaborative practice and policy and program development within the Nursing Administration and across Divisions at Boston Medical Center. Quality of Care * Engages in activities and learning to improve the quality and efficiency of processes of care related to admission, in hospital transitions and discharge * Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates discharge planning processes and practices. (Make necessary changes to promote better patient flow) * Leads policy and procedure development for patient throughput, placement, and/or discharge planning as needed * Collaborates with Nursing Leadership in the development of standards for professional practice, patient care, and innovative programs designed to facilitate high quality throughput of patients throughout the organization and from outside facilities. * Fosters the development of a work environment conducive to the delivery of superior leadership, nursing care and appropriate staff retention/recruitment. * Responsible for the performance of divisional staff for adherence to established departmental standards, standards of practice, policies, procedures and protocols. * Develops and implements strategies for ensuring compliance with patient care standards, laws, regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and the standards and requirements of the various professional organizations and regulatory agencies. * Gathers, interprets, and disseminates information on hospital-wide policies, new programs and other pertinent information to off shift nurse managers. * Provides leadership for and participates in the development of continuous multidisciplinary quality improvement for assigned areas, in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team. Coordination * Participates in developing and implementing mechanisms for collaboration between staff members, physicians, clinical and administrative staff and throughout departments * Collaborates with other agencies and groups within the community to enhance patient care services and patient flow * Works cooperatively with ancillary staff including transport, environmental services, laboratory, radiology, dietary and medical records staff. Ensure patient service is continuous and of high quality * Provides leadership to hospital-wide and nursing organization committees by either committee participation or direct leadership responsibility. * Assumes a leadership role in a changing healthcare environment and participates in the change process at various levels in the organization * Provides direction, motivation, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring to off shift nurse managers and other administrative nursing staff Budget * Allocates and monitors resources within area of responsibility * Collaborates with Associate Chief Nurse to manage department budget * Collaborates with the manager's to maintain productivity throughout the inpatient departments Personnel Management * Provides leadership in the selection, evaluation, promotion, resolution of employee relations/disciplinary concerns, and the termination of employees * Provides and/or coordinates the development of all off shift nurse managers, in collaboration with nurse managers, assures that the developmental needs are met. * Supports employment practices that ensure a culturally diverse workforce Education * Establishes relationships with external organizations to facilitate the development and sharing of knowledge * Evaluates and identifies the educational needs of personnel within division and assures development and implementation of programs that meet these identified needs and offers opportunities to staff * Identifies areas for own professional growth and assures responsibility for participating in experiences necessary to meet development needs. * Participates in appropriate organizations and represents Boston medical Center at appropriate external meetings or organizations. Planning * Contributes to improving management information for the Nursing Department using available hospital resources and capabilities. This information is utilized in forecasting, determining development, facilities, equipment, and relationships with other clinical areas and hospital support services. Responsible for the interpreting data to develop nursing strategic planning, including but not limited to patient flow, workforce, facilities/clinical services, operations improvements. Other Duties * Utilizes the hospital's Values, Mission and Beliefs as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission * Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures BSN required, Masters Degree in relevant field preferred. Licensed to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required. A minimum of five years related clinical experience required with progressive nursing leadership. Two years' experience in a critical care environment preferred. Previous Bed Flow experience preferred. * Broad-based health care operational experience; Demonstrated knowledge of various health systems and cost reduction strategies. * Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served. * Self-directed, self-starter and able to implement new programs. * Demonstrated ability as an effective leader. * Demonstrated ability to apply principles of adult learning to provide education to staff, physician, and auxiliary staff. * Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement and research projects. * Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently to complete assigned workload. * Physical ability to meet core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served * Ability to manage stress due to critical patient care issues, changing organizational climate and personnel issues. * Multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to patient populations served by the Medical Center is highly desirable.
