POSITION: OCHMO Human Spaceflight Standards Integrator

The role of the Health and Medical Technical Authority (HMTA) is to execute the Institutional Authority function as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) governance model. The Chief Health and Medical Officer (CHMO) is designated as the HMTA for the Agency. The purpose of the Technical Authorities is to establish standards, disposition waivers, and serve as chief technical advisors to the NASA Administrator. Therefore, the goal of the HMTA is to manage human system risks through the fundamental integration of human health and performance requirements via programmatic and project insight and oversight, coupled with the appropriate support and involvement of subject matter experts.

The HMTA accomplishes this goal through dedicated and embedded HMTA personnel. The role of the embedded staff is to serve as the shepherd of expertise, derive solutions, and identify acceptable compromises to issues with human health and performance requirements. In addition, the team communicates the status of these issues to HHP management, Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), Crew Health and Performance Officers (CHPOs), and the CHMO, as needed. This work is done for all current and emerging NASA human space flight programs, the Human Research Program, and other human-related technology programs.

This position will directly support to the Office of the Chief and Medical Officer (OCHMO) HMTA Standards Fellow at NASA/JSC in Houston, Texas. As an OCHMO Standards Integrator, this position will participate in developing and maintaining the NASA Standard 3001 Volumes 1 & 2, Human Spaceflight Standards. The integrator position obtains and maintains broad knowledge of all human health and performance requirements and engages SMEs for the technical details. Our integrators are assigned to specific human health and performance discipline areas such as crew health, environmental factors, medical operations, physiology, anthropometry, strength and biomechanics, maintenance and housekeeping, safety, habitability and architecture, information management, and displays and controls. Our integrators interface with OCHMO, HMTA and HH&P management. Human Systems Integration strategies are implemented in order to inform HMTA standards and efficiently support Human Spaceflight Programs. Lessons learned while providing support to Human Spaceflight Programs are leveraged to improve HMTA standards and strategic processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health, and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company's safety policies and rules, and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel

  • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures

  • Responsible for completing all assigned training

  • Attend weekly meetings as required

  • Coordinate with subject matter experts and vehicle development program integrators to develop, maintain, and update HMTA Standards and supporting documentation.

  • Participate in OCHMO/HMTA meetings, HH&P meetings, and internal team meetings; develop and deliver presentations as necessary.

  • Identify gaps in existing standards, requirements, and supporting documentation based on NASA spaceflight strategy.

  • Participate in development, implementation, and execution of educational outreach strategy materials to inform users of intent, background, and application of NASA-STD-3001 and supporting documentation. Users range from human systems discipline personnel to hardware/systems developers, to managers.

  • Implement and use necessary tools to support team strategy and processes, such as SharePoint and MS Office.

  • Developing and managing Agency policy

  • Maintaining human spaceflight awareness across the Agency

  • Screening products coming to OCHMO for review and approval

  • Representing the OCHMO HMTA Standards Fellow as required.

  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Human Factors, Engineering, or closely related field from an accredited university and a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant professional experience .

DESIRED

  • Demonstrated experience with NASA Technical Authority or JSC Human Health and Performance Directorate.

SKILLS/TRAINING

REQUIRED:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to communicate effectively with project managers, project leads, section personnel, customers, and contract colleagues is essential.

  • Ability to attain and maintain the respect and confidence of the customer and contract personnel. A close, cooperative customer interface is essential.

  • Must be open-minded to new ideas and ways of doing business, willing to pursue new opportunities aggressively, and flexible enough to adapt to a rapidly changing technical environment.

  • Mature, professional judgment in establishing objectives, milestones, and priorities.

  • Reliable and dependable work habits and the dedication to get the job done.
