Job Summary:

In coordination with ORDS management, the Assistant Commissioner, User Experience (AC, UX) constructs, reviews, and optimizes the UX strategy for the Office of Research and Data Science (ORDS).

The AC, UX ensures the value and successful implementation of the UX strategy to ORDS, stakeholders, and customers. In addition, the AC, and UX manage, develop, and oversee direct reports (e.g., personnel and assets). This position receives little technical support from management. The Assistant Commissioner must have a strong grasp of data-visualizing technologies, front-end development, peer review, customer needs, content management, user interfaces/user experience, data governance, and data quality and control frameworks. This position requires effective integration of customer communication and highly technical content. The incumbent must have a strong eye for design, effective visual communication, and branding.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the ORDS' UX strategy

  • Manage personnel

  • Manage the UDRC website assets

  • Manage UX assets (e.g., Tableau Server)

  • Peer review ORDS end products

  • Project manage new UX initiatives

  • Building user-friendly and mobile-friendly data narratives with Tableau, CSS, HTML5

  • Guiding and mentoring researchers and reporting staff on best practices for communicating their technical work to a broader audience

  • Researching new methods and technology to communicate research and reports effectively with ORDS customers and presenting proposals to management

  • Web page prototyping in Figma and/or Adobe XD

  • Conducting usability surveys with ORDS customers and providing website updates and accessibility recommendations to management

  • Collecting user data through Google Analytics

  • Maintaining and developing changes to ORDS design and style guides

  • Providing effective and communicative data visualizations for customers in conjunction with staff researchers, while also training researchers on data visualization best practices

  • Facilitating collaboration between stakeholders and the ORDS to increase external use of ORDS data and data products

  • Drafting and finalizing website copy, while ensuring consistency and integration of messaging for internal and external audiences

  • Working with ORDS researchers/and reporters to edit research and report products for accessibility and readability

  • Presenting to a varied group of stakeholders, including executive and legislative branches, data-contributing agencies, and external stakeholders

  • Manage the data quality control and assurance work processes

  • Ensure data is aligned with UDRC and USHE policies and practices

  • Maintain data dictionaries and glossaries

  • Ability to perform all other tasks as assigned

Skills:

  • Experience with a formal peer review process as a reviewer and submitter

  • Experience writing and developing content for data narratives and websites

  • Experience designing effective interactive data visualizations

  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality

  • Experience with front-end code and website content management

  • Ability to communicate effectively, including communicating complex data and analysis, to audiences with limited knowledge of research and statistical methods

  • Knowledge and skill in data analysis and statistics and their application

  • Knowledge and skill in data reporting

  • Ability to interact with users through Google Analytics and surveys to improve the website/data narrative experience

  • A commitment to continuously improving processes to

  • increase efficiency and effectiveness

  • Strong workload management skills and abilities, with an emphasis on the ability to prioritize and attention to detail

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write highly technical and significantly less technical documents, presentations, and research papers

  • Experience designing and publishing interactive data visualizations, specifically with Tableau, for desktop and mobile Experience gathering user feedback

  • High competency with front-end technologies, such as HTML5, CSS, Tableau, JavaScript

  • Experience with data cleansing processes and applications (SQL or Tableau Prep)

  • Experience in a professional communication setting

  • Experience with website version control and backup

  • Experience working effectively and meeting deadlines without close supervision

  • Experience with utilizing GitHub

  • Experience with data governance software

  • Experience with data governance frameworks

  • Experience with data quality control and assurance frameworks

Qualifications & Education:

  • Master's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • 8 years experience in a related field
