JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of a Marine Safety Officer, is responsible for the surveillance of the ocean and the prevention of emergency situations. The incumbent assists the public in case of emergency, renders first aid to injured patrons and exercises careful watch over recreational activities, facilities and equipment. Work is reviewed through observation and oral reports for adherence to established policies and beach rules. Work schedule includes weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prevents emergency situations; renders first aid to injured patrons; performs ocean rescues; obtains professional aid in case of serious accident or injury.

  • Informs the public of the municipal codes as related to beach and water activities; warns the public of existing and periodic hazards of the ocean and the beach.

  • Prevents rough playing on the beach; exercises careful watch over small children and adolescents, recognizes non-swimmers and prevents the need to perform ocean rescues.

  • Fills out activity reports; drives and maintains city vehicles; posts ocean conditions for public information.

  • Recognizes ocean currents and conditions in order to be proactive in public safety to prevent accidents and/or injuries.

  • Communicates clearly on portable radios in emergency situations.

  • Performs related work, including cleaning and maintenance of Headquarters and Tower, and other duties as required for this position description only.

  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.

  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.

The Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Required:

High School diploma or GED equivalent, plus one (1) year experience as an Ocean Lifeguard.

500 meter run/500 meter swim under 12 minutes required

Must speak and understand the English language is required

Preferred:

EMT is preferred.

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • CPR Certification to be obtained within one year of hire.

  • First Responder Certification to be obtained within one year of hire.

  • Valid Driver's License: With proof of automobile insurance

  • Background Check:Must have an acceptable background record

  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of ocean rescue and life?saving methods and practices.

  • Knowledge of municipal rules and regulations related to the use of beach areas.

  • Ability to make sound, quick independent judgments and to handle persons in emergency or life threatening situations.

  • Ability to instruct and supervise beach users in the prevention of various accidents.

  • Ability to perform rigorous exercises and keep in top physical condition, including but not limited to, running, swimming, and paddling.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

  • Ability to pass an annual requalification test consisting of one half mile swim, one half mile run within 24 ½ minutes.

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency using a buoy and rescue board.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to conduct sedentary work, light work, medium work, heavy work, very heavy work, balance, climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger objects, grasp, handle, hear, kneel, lift, make rational decisions, pull, push, reach, use repetitive motion, speak, stand, stoop, talk, visualize and walk. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.

This position spends most of the time working in a physically threatening environment that requires me to make life and death decisions for the employee and others.

The Examination

You will be required to run 500 meters and swim 500 meters in 12 minutes or less and you must also speak and understand the English language.

SWIM TEST IS SCHEDULED

WEDNESDAY

July 17, 2024

AT 9:30AM

This run/swim test will be given at the Lifeguard First Aid Station on Hollywood Beach at Madison Street. (954) 921-3423. Parking is available behind 1201 S. Ocean Drive in a City of Hollywood designated parking lot.

You will also be required to pass a background check and drug screen.

Additional Information

All successful applicants will be required to pass an extensive background which may include criminal history searches, driving history checks, credit report, courthouse searches, education verification, employment verification, professional license verification, or other search methods as deemed necessary for the position. In addition, the applicant will be required to undergo a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, prior to appointment.

Employment of Relatives:The City of Hollywood has an Ordinance which regulates the employment of relatives of City employees. Effective January 28, 2008, a relative may only be hired under the following additional conditions:

  • *The relative must have competed in an appropriate examination process as determined by Human Resources and be placed on a civil service eligibility list;
  • *The relative must be among the top three ranked candidates available on the certified eligibility list unless expanded by the Civil Service Board;
  • *The Department or Office Director and the Director, Human Resources must demonstrate that it is in the best interests of the City of Hollywood to hire the relative of a public officer or employee.

As of 12/15/2005 the City will require all newly hired employees to sign an affidavit affirming non-usage of tobacco or tobacco products within the last yearprior to submission of application and will continue to be a non-user of tobacco products throughout employment with the City of Hollywood.
