The incumbent functions as an Occupational Therapy Clinical Specialist in Assistive Technology (AT) with special emphasis in wheelchair and seating evaluation for the Department, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service of South Texas Veteran's Healthcare System (STVHCS). This position requires a licensed and registered Occupational Therapist who works independently with general guidance from the Occupational Therapy Supervisor.
The primary role of this position is to take the lead role in the evaluation for and prescription of wheelchair and seating systems to patients referred to PM&R with a secondary role in the prescription of services and equipment in areas of Assistive Technology. Areas of AT include but are not limited to: Adaptive sports, adaptive computer access, electronic aids of daily living, cognitive aids and apps., and augmentative and assistive communication.
The Lead Specialist's is responsible for providing specialty evaluations surrounding seating and wheeled mobility and evaluations surrounding AT services and equipment. The incumbent may assist with other outpatient or inpatient care as needed. The incumbent serves as a resource to any of the wheelchair clinics within STVHCS for any and complex wheelchair and seating and could address Occupational Therapy issues as they relate to wheelchair and seating.
The Lead Specialist's responsibilities also include: remain current on latest advances in assistive technology with emphasis in wheeled mobility and seating technology; train and support therapy staff in these related areas, as needed; serve as liaison between the PM&R Service, SCI Service, Polytrauma Service, and Prosthetics Service, by attending meetings, as needed; improve and streamline various processes related to OT's role in specialty areas noted; perform program development in areas of responsibility; participate as needed in the ordering of new equipment for successful evaluation and training purposes for patients; fulfill other administrative duties as needed. Travel away from main campus and between VA campuses may be performed as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs).
1.Advanced knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to apply this advanced knowledge to provide clinical guidance to staff OTs within the department.
2.Demonstrated clinical knowledge of advanced specialized evaluation, interventions, and services to independently develop treatment strategies for specialty populations;
3.Skill in developing protocols and procedures for intervention programs based on current occupational therapy theory, recent research and practice;
4.Ability to provide consultation to other health care practitioners and outside groups about occupational therapy scope of practice and areas of expertise;
5.Ability to implement, revise/update evidence based occupational therapy services in specialized areas such as polytrauma, TBI, SCI, geriatrics, mental health, driver rehabilitation, home based primary care (HBPC) and other specialty areas;
6.Advanced knowledge in prosthetics/orthotics devices and demonstrated ability to make adjustments on devices or adaptive equipment to obtain maximum benefit from the device. May assess for and fabricate orthotic devices and proceed with modifications as needed.
