GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Employed in the public school system to facilitate the handicapped student's independent functioning with the use of purposeful, goal-oriented activity. This goal is accomplished by the occupational therapist through screening, evaluation, treatment, and consultation.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Screens and evaluates students with physical and/or psychosocial disabilities in the areas of gross and fine motor functions, independent living skills, and sensory and perceptual-motor skills.

Plans intervention and service delivery programs to meet the students' individual needs.

Implements direct, indirect, and management programs based on intervention goals determined by evaluation results.

Provides information and consultation services to administrators, school personnel, parents, and community agencies to develop and maintain support of students with physical and/or psychosocial disabilities in the educational environment and the objectives of the occupational therapy service.

Promotes effective verbal and written communication with administrators, school personnel, parents, and community agencies.

Establishes the necessary schedules, procedures, resources, and records to manage the occupational therapy program and works cooperatively to accomplish the goals of the LEA.

Assists with recruitment and staffing of therapy personnel.

Adheres to the ethical standards and codes of the profession, and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing Exceptional Children Programs. The occupational therapist participates in activities that assists with professional development, and uses clinical-educational research information to enhance occupational therapy services.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

To have completed a college preparation program in occupational therapy and be licensed in North Carolina as an occupational therapist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able sit, stand and walk.

Must be able to lift boxes up to 10 pounds. Physical demand requirements are for Light Work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and write complex text and forms.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, with and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using coordination equipment and computers.

Manual Dexterity: Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.
