The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation empowers individuals with disabilities to maximize employment, achieve economic self-sufficiency and independence, and to contribute back to society. We also help businesses and employers recruit, retain and accommodate employees with disabilities.

We are seeking a Occupational Therapist to perform professional occupational therapy with the work bioptic driving evaluation and behind the wheel training for qualified OVR consumers; and performs other duties as required.

Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist through Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED) preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides behind-the-wheel training and assistance to take the Kentucky Class D operator's license exam. Teach the theory & techniques required to safely operate a motor vehicle.

    Teach defensive, proactive, driving techniques. Provide training in a variety of conditions and environments. Provide training that supports safe driving performance and the client's specific driving goals.

  • Prepares evaluation reports and final reports, and communicates training progress regularly with VR counselors regarding referred consumers from their caseload.

  • Reviews referrals, interprets medical reports, schedules consumers for evaluations, and coordinates referrals for bioptic device, O&M bioptic evaluation.

  • Monitor progress toward established driving goals and make referrals to appropriate services (i.e., therapy, CDRS, physician) as needed to improve driving readiness or recommend driving cessation as appropriate.

  • Reviews and interprets bioptic driving laws and regulations regarding evaluating and training low vision drivers, and provides input and information to ensure proper administration of Bioptic Driving Program.

  • Perform other duties as required.

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a Masters Degree in occupational therapy.

Working Conditions

Possible exposure to infectious wastes and diseases while helping residents, which may require the following of safety procedures. Possibility of falls or strains while assisting residents.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
