The Occupational Therapist functions as an integral part of the rehabilitation team and has a responsibility for evaluating and treating patient requiring services associated with occupational therapy. The Occupational Therapist is expected to communicate with the Physicians and other Healthcare professionals regarding the patient's treatment plan and progress, and deliver services consistent with policies and procedures governing the delivery of patient care by the Rehabilitation Department, State Licensure and Code of Ethics standards.


  • Perform examination and evaluation to determine diagnosis and prognosis of patient/client and determine appropriate intervention to gain desired outcomes based on patient/client goals.

  • Utilization of appropriate Occupational therapy interventiosn to produce desired outcomes.

  • Utilization of appropriate documentation and billing to communicate progress and status to physicians, other healthcare professions and third party reimbursement.

  • Maintains Professional Code of Ethics and State Licensure Laws.

  • Supervision of Occupational Therapist Assistant in accordance to State Licensure Laws.

  • Keep work area and equipment clean and orderly by maintaining and practicing hospital and department policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control.

  • Performs as a member of Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication, quality assurance programs and meetings.


Minimum Education:

  • Graduate of an Accredited Occupational Therapy program. (Master's or Bachelors level)

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licensed by the state of Iowa

  • CPR Certified

  • Preferred Certification/Registration: Membership in professional associations desirable.

  • Must have basic computer skills

  • Must be able to meet the competency of area assigned to and also be able to successfully complete orientation

  • Must be able to meet reliable attendance guidelines

  • Must legally perform the essential functions of the job

Provides subject matter expertise and proficiency of clinical best practices and achieve standards for patient satisfaction and outcomes for care delivered. Responsibilities Clinical Excellence/Patient Care * Ensures quality and safe delivery of services to patients according to care plan. Uses equipment and supplies safely, effectively, and efficiently. * Consistently utilizes a patient-centered approach considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned service area. * Treats patients/clients to relieve pain, develop or restore function and maintain maximum performance using specified occupational therapy procedures. * Directs and aids patients/clients in plan of treatment. * Utilizes physical agents including heat, cold, water, electricity, ultrasound and massage. * Observes and reports to the Occupational Therapist and organizational personnel the patient/client reaction to treatment and any changes in patient/client condition. * Instructs patient/family/caregivers in care and use of prosthetic device, therapeutic aids, splinting, and wrapping techniques as needed. * Provides patient, family, and/or caregiver education and information pertinent to diagnosis and safety issues. * Assists in the promotion of services and products. * Maintains accurate and timely documentation of clinical records and time/travel entries. Quality * Delivers quality care consistent with Home Health Conditions of Participation, qualifying home care criteria, payor coverage criteria, and providing visits/treatments consistent with the plan of care. * Conducts clinical review of records to include multi-disciplinary review, coordination of care, provided in conjunction with visits and documentation. * Identifies risk for acute hospitalization and proactively prevents adverse events. * Participates in case conferences, in-service programs and other meetings required to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care. Achieve certification in Integrated Care Management within 1 year of hire. Certification includes completing the Integrated Care Management formal training session, successfully completing assigned computer based-learning modules within 2 weeks of training, and a competency evaluation. Use the Integrated Care Management philosophy, skills, tools and documentation in clinical practice. Demonstrate competency in selected ICM skills annually * Employee is responsible for completion of communication tasks and activities in a timely manner. This would include, but is not limited to: responding to email, voicemail or telephone messages, promptly, accurately, and professionally; attending staff meetings as scheduled or viewing videotapes of those meetings; asking questions of team members and supervisors when needing clarification about various day-to-day issues or patient needs; and reviewing employee communication pieces, to stay aware of UnityPoint at Home programs and initiatives. Basic UPH Performance Criteria * Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. * Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. * Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. * Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. * Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. * Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance. Qualifications Education: * Graduate of State Board approved program for Occupational Therapy Assistants and valid license as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.
