JOB SUMMARY:

Provide Psychiatric Occupational Therapy service to patients on acute Inpatient Psychiatry and Outpatient Behavioral Health Program. Upon referral, services include OTR assessments, planning individual patient short term and long-term goals and implementation of treatment modalities. In Inpatient Psychiatry, the OTR works with the Nurse Manager and Director in establishing a therapeutic milieu and program. In the Outpatient Programs, the OTR works with the Coordinator and Director to ensure program integrity and participate in team case management functions. The OTR demonstrates current knowledge of principles and practices of Occupational therapy and has knowledge of the practices of other disciplines. Participates in job related departmental functions and strives to be an integral member of the patient care team.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of a School of Occupational Therapy accredited by the council on Medical Education of AMA and the AOTA or its equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

  • New graduate without experience acceptable unless a specific number of years required due to the needs of the department at the time of the appointment.

  • Minimum of two years psychiatric occupational therapy experience preferred.

PREREQUISITE SKILLS

  • Personal and professional integrity, interest in growth and learning

  • Ability to demonstrate good customer relations

  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members, hospital staff, patients and physicians

  • Capable of organizing multiple tasks and using good time management and attention to detail

  • Ability to read, speak, write, understand and follow English verbal and written instructions.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED

  • An active member of American Occupational Therapy Association at the District, Chapter and/or National level

  • Participation in outside educational forums to continue own professional development

LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Possess current license as an Occupational Therapist by the California Board of Occupational Therapy

  • Certified as a Basic Life Support provider (BLS-HCP American Heart Association) within 90 days of hire

  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) training within 90 days of hire

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

ESSENTIAL (not modifiable)

  • On referral, assesses patients by administering appropriate evaluation tools. Develops a treatment plan and goals based on results of assessment; reassesses and makes appropriate changes in the treatment program according to the patients' progress.

  • Administers direct patient care, utilizing various occupational therapy techniques and procedures. Is expected to organize the patient care time to meet established treatment goals by appropriate setting of priorities and accomplishing tasks competently.

  • Provides occupational therapy treatment services on a group or individual basis. Group activities may include: cognitive task groups, communication, leisure skills, life skills, community resource group, recreational activities, outdoor patio breaks and activities, and special holiday milieu activities.

  • Conducts individual occupational therapy sessions as indicated.

  • Assists nursing in patient hygiene and bathing as well as maintains and provides daily hygiene cart supplies to patients.

  • Prepares, maintains, and transmits accurate, complete and timely patient records in accordance with The Joint Commission and hospital guidelines.

  • Confers with the multidisciplinary team, other therapists, physicians, social workers, nurses, and other related personnel regarding progress of the patient and adaptation of treatment program in relation to other needs.

  • Instructs the patient in the treatment program and establishes effective rapport to facilitate the attainment of the treatment goals.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, inservices, safety and CQI activities.

  • Orders department supplies and maintains inventory.

  • Supervises Occupational Therapy interns and volunteers, as assigned.

  • Prepares daily statistics and billing for services.

  • Provides liaison for organization in implementation of adjunct therapy groups; i.e., Humane Society (animal-assisted therapy), Bread and Roses (entertainment), intergenerational groups.

  • Demonstrates competence in unit-specific skills.

  • Works with CSW staff in assessing, recommending and making referrals to appropriate rehab and educational programs in the community.

  • Supervises the COTA and makes recommendations to nursing staff regarding program and milieu management.

  • Participates in MAB as indicated.

  • Assists CNM and Director in milieu program changes and safety initiatives as requested.

SECONDARY (modifiable)

  • Participates and takes active leadership role in milieu management, including evaluation of patient's free time and leisure activities.

  • Keeps abreast of current trends and other developments in Occupational Therapy.

  • Receiving and stocking inventory

  • Assisting with transfers of wheelchair patients.

  • Assesses need for and recommends appropriate assistive devices for patients.

  • Other duties as assigned.
