Title: Occupational Therapist

Salary: Paid off of the certified salary schedule with an additional supplement added to make the salary competitive in the market (This position has a 190 day contract.)

Reports to: Principal and Director of Special Education

Purpose and Objectives of the Position: The Occupational Therapist will plan and provide therapy to students with mental, physical, sensory or emotional disabilities. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to maximize physical or mental functioning, increase independent functioning, and/or adjust to disabilities.

Essential Job Functions:

Assessment:

  • Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services.

  • Participate in the General Education Interventions Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.

Therapy:

  • Plan and provide direct and consultative occupational therapy services consistent with goals contained in students Individual Education Program (IEP).

  • Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of occupational therapy services.

  • Design, construct, alter, and provide students with assistive technology to promote independence.

Consultation:

  • Consult with educational staff and parents regarding occupational therapy.

  • Provide staff development training in assigned school to assist school personnel with selection and use of adaptive equipment, assistive technology and the understanding of occupational therapy program.

  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.

Student Management:

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the student.

  • Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management:

  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the occupational therapy program and implement changes based on the findings.

  • Assist in the selection of equipment and adaptive material.

  • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

Administration:

  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required.

  • Maintain and report Medicaid paperwork to appropriate personnel within required timelines.

  • Comply with policies established by Federal and State law, State Board of Education rule, and local Board policy.

  • Comply with all district and building routines and regulations.

  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.

  • Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Occupational Therapy or related program.

  • Valid Kansas license as an Occupational Therapist granted by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.

  • Knowledge of rehabilitation procedures, activities, and equipment used in occupational therapy.

  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.

  • Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.

  • Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

  • Must verify good health by passing a physical examination, which includes TB and drug test as required.

  • Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.

  • Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

Terms of Employment: # of days. Salary to be established by the Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the USD 450 Board of Educations policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and this job description.
