Responsibilities

Position is located in the Occupational Therapy Department of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) of in the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw. The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction. The COTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by an Occupational Therapist, but must be able to carry out a general treatment plan without the direct involvement of an occupational therapist. Additional duties include dispensing assistive devices/equipment in the prosthetic clinic and phone clinic, clinical training of occupational therapy assistant students, high school students, and volunteers and completion of various administrative tasks within the department. The duties and responsibilities of this position are carried out throughout the medical center including various clinical, administrative and patient care areas associated with PM&RS. A valid driver's license is required for this position.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Receives and interprets requests or instructions for occupational therapy procedures.

  • Completes a preliminary review/examination of patient data (including medical history), compiles and organizes pertinent information, and develops/presents a patient profile to be used in assessing patient's status and ascertaining patient's need for therapy services.

  • Plans and implements specialized treatment programs and applies occupational therapy procedures to patients under the general supervision of an occupational therapist.

  • Employee may carry out or oversee the work of lower graded assistants to accommodate requests. Procedures require close consultation with a therapist or physician.

  • Assists with or independently renders specialized occupational therapy treatments and procedures based on the assessed needs of the patient.

Work schedule: 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (Monday through Friday, Required to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays)

Physical Requirements:
The work requires frequent stooping, bending, walking, handling of wheelchairs and lifting in conjunction with treatment of patients. At times, there may be undue heavy lifting due to unforeseen circumstances such as preventing a patient from falling. Dexterity and skill in safe machinery technique are required.

Preferred Experience/Qualification: Certified Occupational therapist assistant (COTA). At least 1 year experience working in a Skilled nursing facility or acute rehabilitation hospital is preferred.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Education. Successful completion of an associate's degree in occupational therapy from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Grandfathering Provision. The following is the standard grandfathering policy for all Title 38 hybrid qualification standards. Some of these provisions may not apply to this occupation. Please carefully review the qualification standard to determine the specific education and/or licensure/certification/ registration requirements that apply to this occupation.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met.

GS-4

Experience. None beyond the basic requirements.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to review patient data and make a preliminary determination of their needs.

  • Ability to obtain subjective history.

  • Ability to interpret information gained through subjective history.

  • Ability to communicate with health care providers, patients, and staff for optimal patient care.

GS-5

Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, 6 months of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. Experience may have been gained as an OTA, rehabilitation aide, technician, volunteer, or in the medical health services field. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to assist in the development of treatment goals/objectives.

  • Ability to implement a patient care plan incorporating activity analysis theory.

  • Skill in written communication to document preliminary data, progress/change in status, discharge status, and patient or caregiver education.

  • Knowledge of basic group techniques and interpersonal communications.

  • Ability to assist in the use of standardized assessment tools to the area of practice assigned.

GS-6

Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of a variety of standardized assessment tools in order to provide a more comprehensive intervention under the supervision of an occupational therapist.

  • Ability to use problem-solving skills when providing therapeutic interventions for patients who have a wide range of diagnoses and disabilities.

  • Ability to provide complex/multi-step instructions to patients, caregivers, and other health care professionals adapting instructions to meet the learning needs of the individual.

  • Ability to promote occupational therapy services effectively, providing training and interventions within the assigned areas.

GS-7

Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to utilize more complex therapeutic techniques and interventions, utilizing problem-solving skills, to maximize patient's functional status.

  • Ability to modify and adapt therapeutic interventions for simple and complex cases with a wide range of diagnoses and disabilities.

  • Ability to identify and recommend complex adaptive and assistive devices and durable medical equipment.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04 to GS-07.
