JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose Statement

The job of an Occupational Therapist is performed for the purpose/s of assessing a student's functional development level, providing appropriate treatment to meet individual student objectives, and providing recommendations for program development and student placement.

Essential Functions

  • Implements therapeutic activities to address deficits in the area/s of fine motor, visual motor, sensory-motor, and visual perceptual as indicated on the IEP (504 plan).

  • Administers, interprets, and writes up assessments in the areas of fine motor, visual motor, sensory-motor, and visual perceptual how these areas affect a student's academic performance.

  • Instructs students, teachers, parents and other involved persons for the purpose of supporting the student's IEP (or 504) plan.

  • Meets regularly with the Occupational Therapist Assistant through a collaborative process to review and inspect all aspects of occupational therapy services rendered. The level of supervision is commensurate with the education and training of the occupational therapy assistant and district guidelines.

  • Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans (IEP, 504) for services, and/or making recommendations.

  • Participates in meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that state standards and/or federal mandates are achieved (IEP or 504 process).

  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. progress reports, daily treatment notes, Medicaid billing, student activities, correspondence, IEPs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

  • Presents information (e.g. student performance data, clinical feedback, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.

  • Assesses/recommends need for adaptive equipment and/or environmental modifications as needed for the successful implementation of a student's functional goals.

  • Participates/facilitates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform school based functions.

  • Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing a student's functional goals.

  • Travel between schools to provide services.

Other Functions

  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities including collaboration and co-treating students with other district personnel.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices, preparing and maintaining accurate records, operating devices used in occupational therapy treatments, correct application of therapeutic activities, and interpersonal communication and interactive (both written and verbal) skills.

KNOWLEDGE is required to read technical information, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions, and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes health standards and hazards, safety practices and procedures, knowledge of medical and neurodevelopmental conditions commonly seen in a pediatric population, knowledge of various assessment materials for this population and knowledge of positioning devices.

ABILITY is required to participate in a number of activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data, and consider a number of factors when using occupational therapy-related devices. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, work with data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate job-related devices using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups, work with data of varied types and/or purposes, and utilize a variety of types of job-related devices. In working with others, problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Problem-solving with job-related devices is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality, and working as part of a team.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision, using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the Organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting (on a variety of surfaces including chairs, floor, stools, benches etc.), 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under a generally hazard-free environment.

Experience

Job-related experience within a specialized field is required.

Graduation from an occupational therapy program accredited by ACOTE or predecessor

20 CEU every 2 years OT license

36 hours every 3 years for NBCOT certification
