This Nutritionist II is responsible for providing more extensive individualized nutritional assessment and counseling for all WIC participants to include those identifies as high risk (patients with chronic medical problems and/or complex medical needs) requiring specialized formulas and nutrition products according to established Nutrition Department criteria.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assess the nutrition status of WIC Program applicants to determine eligibility using anthropometrics, biochemical, clinical, dietary and socioeconomic data.

  • Determine and document an appropriate care plan based on assessed needs and provide instruction/education.

  • Refer high-risk WIC Program clients to the Registered Dietitian, and schedule return appointments based on referral criteria.

  • Provide both individual and group education to clients and staff on various topics in nutrition and related health-care concerns.

  • Provide breastfeeding education to WIC participants, and provide appropriate technical assistance as needed.

  • Make needed referrals to breastfeeding peer counselors and /or staff breastfeeding educators.

  • Issue/receive breast pumps to/from enrolled WIC Program participants according to program policy and procedures.

  • Maintain an accurate log of daily activities and services provided.

Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.

Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetics Registration; or Master's degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Nutrition

or

graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education- approved Didactic Program in Dietetics and two years nutrition experience

or

Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor's degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience

or

a Bachelor's of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience

Administering the Class- Candidates should provide documentation of registration status from the Commission on Dietetic Registration; provide university or college transcripts or CADE verification statement.

Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities.

Applicants who have obtained their education outside of the U.S. and its territories must have their academic degrees validated as equivalent to the degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S.  The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent.   • Specialized knowledge and skill in comprehensive nutrition assessment and care planning, including problem diagnosis, counseling, and evaluation of participants from diverse backgrounds, ages, and with multiple and complex health and therapeutic nutritional needs.

  • Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for effecting behavior change with considerable skill in counseling.

  • Broad knowledge in health care ethics, documentation in the medical record, and quality assurance.

  • Knowledge in organization of community health and nutrition resources.

  • Sophisticated knowledge of current scientific information regarding nutrition, diet, and health and the ability to relate this information to clients, professionals, and the general public.

  • Skill in conducting a nutrition education or community needs assessment.

  • Fundamental knowledge of current principles and practices of public health, and program coordination.

  • Ability to interpret policy and protocols into operational procedures and work priorities.

  • Skill in organizing and coordinating work with others.

  • Full range of skill in presenting ideas orally and in writing in a clear, concise manner.  

Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Background check and negative drug test are required.
