The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Assistant completes the WIC eligibility and certification process which includes enrollment, health screening, growth monitoring, diet screening, nutrition focused counseling, goal setting, food benefit issuance, and follow up planning. In addition, they promote breastfeeding and provide education and support around lactation. Nutrition Assistants also facilitate group classes, help connect participants with programs and services in the community, and participate in community outreach and committee activities. All services are provided using participant centered communication skills in a culturally relevant manner. This position will serve WIC families from many different traditions, cultures and backgrounds. This position prefers applicants possess the ability to speak, write and read fluently in the Spanish and English languages.

As the Nutrition Assistant, you will:

  • Perform anthropometric measurements (weights and heights/lengths) and hemoglobin, health and diet screening and assessment

  • Determine nutrition risks and program eligibility, assign food benefits and document all services provided

  • Interview and evaluate client income, housing, employment and other eligibility factors to determine other services available

  • Post eligibility assessment; enroll clients in nutrition and educational classes and training events

  • Facilitate and teach group WIC classes and training events using approved lesson plans

  • Provide program orientation, information, answer questions, review materials and resources as additional information to in-person or telephone/video conversations

  • Provide appropriate nutrition focused counseling based participant health and nutrition assessments and on Oregon State WIC and USDA guidelines and other approved sources

  • Assist with WIC outreach and service delivery to include serving on committees and/or boards to represent the WIC program and services driven to support diverse communities

  • Utilize technology tools to support clinic work including computer based texting, using spreadsheets, reports and other technology tools.

  • Refer participants to community programs and services for health and social services

  • Provide basic breastfeeding information and support; issue breast pumps and provide pump education and/or demonstrations as appropriate

  • Promote breastfeeding as the normal or best way to feed infants; provide counseling at each prenatal WIC visit

  • Teach group prenatal breastfeeding classes as needed

  • Assist with front desk functions including checking in participants, verifying proofs provided and enrolling participants into WIC

  • Participate regularly in team meetings for general program and team updates, changes in policies or processes

  • Assist in training new staff joining the WIC team

TO QUALIFY:

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade

  • One year of experience dealing with the public in a health-related field

  • BLS CPR Certification within 60 days of hire

  • Additional college level coursework in nutrition education.

  • This position prefers bilingual verbal skills in Dari, Arabic, Karen or Somali, and English

Work Location: This position works onsite at Northeast Health Center and Gateway WIC Clinic sites located at 5329 NE Martin Luther King Jr., Blvd. Portland, OR 97211 and 131 NE 102nd Ave. Portland, OR 97220.

Everyday, Multnomah County staff work together to serve as a safety net for our communities. During a disaster, this safety net becomes even more critical. All County employees have a role in serving the public during inclement weather, natural disaster, or other types of community emergency response.
