Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Support Technician (NST) performs patient care, respiratory functions and unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. The NST is expected to anticipate the needs of the patient with the scope of their practice.
The NST collects reports and documents patient data, transcribes orders and keeps the RN informed of pertinent changes in patient condition. The NST also participates in orientation of new personnel as appropriate. Collects reports and documents all patient data accurately in a timely fashion according to nursing policy, including: BPs, HRS, RRS, Temps, O2 Sats, daily wts, l, OS.
Performs any ancillary testing skills including but not limited to: accu-checks, telemetry connections and restraints. Completes all assigned tasks and communicates to the RN the patient responses to care provided in an accurately and timely manner.
Assists with unit orientation and continuing education of students and employees as appropriate. Makes hourly patient rounds in conjunction with the nurse for fluids, toileting, hygiene, turning and keeps patient rooms and areas clean, neat and maintains items within reach. Pays extra attention to patients in high fall risk categories.
Updates information on white boards in patient rooms. Demonstrates responsibility for own competency, mandatories and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up-to-date.
Meets educational requirements for new equipment, materials, procedures, and technology. Prepares for the performance evaluation conference by submitting completed skills list and education attendance documents one month prior to due date.
Understands and follows health standards related to risk management, safety and infection control. Occasionally enters areas where medications are stored (I.E. IV Fluids). Adheres to and consistently supports professional standards and health care regulations that provide for and promote safety, quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining knowledge base of current unit and hospital communication through a variety of modalities including but limited to, communication books, posted notices, meeting minutes, Jackson Hospital intranet and Jackson Hospital email.
High School diploma or equivalent. Previous work experience in job related position. Nurse Aide certificate or certification or 1 year of related experience.
Medical equipment used in the delivery of patient care; telephone, fax, copier, personal computer and related software. Strong verbal and customer focused relations skills required. Ability to interact with the public.
Ability to form effective working relationships with hospital staff and patients. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions.
Must be able to assist in lifting, turning, pushing, pulling and ambulating patients, and moving equipment involving a minimum of 50 pounds. Visual and hearing acuity.
Frequent walking and standing. Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate patient equipment. Ability to meet the attendance requirements of the job.
