About the Job

The Nursing Station Technician is a hybrid position consisting of both Nursing Assistant and Health Unit Coordinator roles to deliver direct patient care and administrative duties.

In this role, you will work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to demonstrate excellent customer service, teamwork and communication skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team on a fasted paced unit. Other job duties include:

  • Patient care such as personal hygiene, vitals, daily activities, repositioning, transporting, and feeding

  • Maintaining unit desk area functions such as answering phones, processing admissions, discharging and transferring forms, transcribing orders, assembling patient charts and ordering tests

  • Setting up and maintaining patient rooms

  • Ordering and stocking of supplies

Qualifications

Successful candidates will be required to possess an active status on the Nursing Assistant Registry and current Basic Life Support Certification by their first day. Student nurses who have completed two semesters of clinicals and will be completing and passing the Nursing Assistant registry exam within 6 months of hire will also be qualified. Preferred candidates will have previous experience as a Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or other related experience.

Responsibilities include performing delegated tasks assigned by the RN staff, transporting patient and / or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, reordering and stocking supplies and other duties as assigned. Performs a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of patient care unit desk area functions. Coordinates the flow of communication on the patient care units. The NST does not work autonomously but under the direction of the professional nurse. They may or may not be given a patient care assignment based on unit needs and the discretion of the nurse manager / charge nurse. Responsibilities/Job Description The Pre/Post-Op NST is responsible for assisting the Perioperative team in the delivery of patient care. Additional responsibilities include transporting patients and / or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, cleaning equipment, reordering and stocking supplies in the perioperative department. The NST performs a wide range of customer service and clerical duties, including providing assistance to patients and visitors, answering the telephone, prepping patient charts and maintaining the patient care unit main desk area. The NST assists in the flow of communication in the pre-operative and post-operative care units and with the escorting of our pediatric patient's caregivers into and out of the operating room for the induction of anesthesia. The NST also: * Respects the confidentiality of all information by sharing information only with those who need to know. * Is punctual and complies with department standards regarding attendance. * Uses time effectively and actively participates in productivity of department. * Identifies and meets the needs of the patients, families and other customers. * Continuously works to improve skills and interpersonal relationships. * Complies with all Fairview and departmental policies and procedures. Qualifications Required Experience: Current Nursing Assistant certification per the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Previous Health Unit Coordinator (HUC), Nursing Assistant (NA) or Nursing Station Technician (NST) experience or completed technical college, or equivalent HUC program, and related experience in a hospital setting strongly preferred. Previous experience working with children or in a customer service role preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred; completion upon hire required. Other skills: Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations is required. Communication skills such as clear speech, ability to read, legible handwriting, and basic computer skills are required.
