The University of Minnesota Medical Center represents an integrated academic health care system and is comprised of two hospitals and dozens of adult specialty clinics on both the East and West banks of the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Nursing Station Technicians- Support the work of the RN to provide exceptional care to our patients and families. The NST floats to all areas of the pediatric hospital including critical care, transplant, oncology, and cardiology. The pediatric float pool NST also functions in the role of a "flyer" and performs the EKGs ordered on the west bank along with holter monitor placement and responds to the needs of individual units.

This position works 48 hours in a 2 week period on the rotating evening/night shift, working 8 hour shifts and every other weekend. This position is benefit eligible.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Nursing Station Technician is a hybrid position consisting of both Nursing Assistant and Health Unit Coordinator roles to deliver direct patient care and administrative duties.

In this role, you will work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to demonstrate excellent customer service, teamwork and communication skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team on a fasted paced unit. Other job duties include:

  • Patient care such as personal hygiene, vitals, daily activities, repositioning, transporting, and feeding

  • Maintaining unit desk area functions such as answering phones, processing admissions, discharging and transferring forms, transcribing orders, assembling patient charts and ordering tests

  • Setting up and maintaining patient rooms

  • Ordering and stocking of supplies



  • Active status on the MN Nursing Assistant Registry

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)


  • Previous Health Unit Coordinator, nursing assistant or related experience

We provide a broad range of pediatric programs from surgery, imaging and neonatal and pediatric intensive care to cardiac and oncology (cancer care) services and blood and marrow and organ transplantation. Our clinical staff apply innovative approaches to creating medical breakthroughs based their work with patients and on findings through research at the University of Minnesota. This has led to several firsts, including the first successful pediatric blood marrow transplant, infant heart transplant in Minnesota and cochlear ear implant surgery for a child. Through teamwork and collaboration, we respectfully address the physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs of pediatric patients and their families. The pediatric float pool RNs consist of two groups- medical/surgical RNs and critical care RNs. The medical/surgical RNs float to the medical/surgical units: blood and bone marrow transplant, oncology, and cardiology as well as the newborn family care center. These RNs also function in the role of resource flyer- being available to assist with patient flow and other duties throughout the hospital. The critical care RNs are able to float to the medical/surgical units as well as the following units: pediatric intensive care, pediatric cardiovascular intensive care, pediatric emergency department, and the neonatal intensive care unit. The critical care RNs function in the role of charge flyer in which they serve as a resource for the entire pediatric hospital, making staffing recommendations, as well as are members of all emergency response teams, including code blue, rapid response team, and trauma activation team. This position will be working 64 hours every two weeks on the evening shift, 8 hour shifts, every third weekend. The position is eligible for benefits. Responsibilities/Job Description * Provides care to pediatric cardiac, nephrology, urology, neurology, solid organ (kidney, heart) transplant, infectious disease, CF, pulmonary, and general medical/surgical patients and their families. Peds Sedation provides care to pediatric acute patients requiring sedation. Peds ED provides care to critically ill and injured pediatric patients that seek emergent care recognizing the unique physiologic and psychosocial needs of the pediatric patient. * (Peds ED) Safely employs (sets-up, utilizes and trouble shoots) the following monitoring devices; * Arterial lines * Cardiac Monitoring * EKGs * EtCO2 * Doppler * Manages complex medication and infusion therapies * Unit specific diagnostic/theraputic procedures Qualifications Required: * BLS for healthcare providers * MN RN licensure  * 9 months inpatient pediatric float pool experience Preferred: * BSN or higher degree in nursing strongly preferred * PALS/ACLS.
