DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. DSU is seeking a Nursing Simulation Technician for the Nursing program. The Simulation Technician will primarily assist faculty in providing students with simulation experiences to meet respective program outcomes. This technician is a part-time position responsible for managing the operations of simulation equipment and assisting with simulation teaching/learning activities within the Nursing program. The Simulation Technician will serve as a planner, consultant, coordinator and technical resource person to assist the nursing faculty and students in low and high fidelity simulations in the classroom, the Nursing Learning Lab, Simulation lab, and other clinical areas. This individual CANNOT be responsible for an entire nursing course unless they hold a minimum of a master's degree in nursing. The Simulation Technician will follow the policies and procedures of Dickinson State University and the Nursing program and will be directly supervised by the Director of the Nursing Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Associate's degree in nursing

  • Experience of at least two (2) years of full-time nursing experience in a variety of clinical specialty areas

  • A licensed nurse, academically prepared through an accredited institution with a current, unencumbered license as recognized by the ND Board of Nursing and meets licensure renewal requirements.

  • Computer literate and proficient with the use of Microsoft Office Suite, Windows and Mac-based PC environment is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with technology regarding simulation

DELIVERABLES & OUTCOMES:

  • Assist respective BSN and AASPN faculty and/or Coordinator(s), and the Director of Nursing.

o Be primarily responsible to assist faculty in:

§ maintaining equipment necessary for simulation experiences.

§ enhancing or creating simulation scenarios/modules.

§ applying moulage and providing other enhancements for realistic learning experiences in a variety of settings

§ preparing and managing audiovisual equipment for recording student performance during simulation (as available).

§ simulation scenarios by actively participating as directed by faculty (i.e. voice of patient or other participants) and providing technical assistance.

§ returning and maintaining supplies and equipment upon completion of simulations

§ being a resource for simulation activities and use of simulation equipment

o Physical demands for assistance include gross and fine motor skills including but not limited to: 1) moving objects 10-50 pounds; push/pull 25 pounds; stand, sustain repetitive movements for 3-4 hours including walking, sitting, balancing, twisting, reaching, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching to provide patient care. 2) Sensory functions include intact hearing, vision, depth perception, tactile and smell senses. 3) Cognitive functions include reading/understanding written/electronic documents and arithmetic competence. 4) Behavioral and emotional stability with interpersonal skills, analytical and critical thinking and professional conduct. 5) Effective communication skills includes ability to convey information, speak and write in English to effectively communicate with students, patients, families and others on the health care team via spoken/written/computer documentation. 6) Provide evidence of MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, DPT/Tdap, Polio immunizations and TB screening; annual Influenza immunizations; criminal background checks; and drug/alcohol screening as required.

o Other relevant technical duties as assigned.

  • Managing the operations of simulation equipment and assisting with simulation teaching/learning activities within the Nursing Programs.

  • Coordinate semester schedules for simulation teaching/clinicals with team/level coordinators to ensure available location, simulator, and equipment/supply and faculty.

  • Provide maintenance of low and high fidelity simulation equipment and computer programs as required, including software updates specific to each simulator's requirements.

  • Troubleshoot problems encountered with simulators and required equipment. Communicate problems to vendors, faculty members and Director of Nursing, and report follow-up/solutions.

  • Provide resource materials for student use in simulation clinical experiences as directed by faculty.

  • Assist with simulation orientation.

  • Assist faculty with formative student evaluations by offering feedback regarding student performance based on the Clinical Performance Evaluation.

  • Contribute information regarding simulation experience for Annual Course Summaries to respective faculty.

  • Attend scheduled team/level meetings as needed to coordinate simulation teaching and learning activities; attend monthly Nursing Faculty Meetings as schedule allows.

  • Participate in the self-evaluative process as outlined in the Nursing Faculty Evaluation guidelines.

  • Assist with information gathering to report updates to faculty on additions and/or changes regarding simulation. Provide a written annual report to the Director on simulator, space, and equipment usage (e.g. simulation scenarios associated with each course, numbers of students completing scenarios, number of hours simulation used, associated costs, etc.) with recommendations for change and a plan for purchasing and replacing simulation equipment and warranties as needed.

  • Assist with gathering simulation information for reports as directed by the Director of Nursing (e.g. ND Board of Nursing, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing [ACEN]).

  • Contribute to the research process in the educational and clinical settings, as appropriate.

  • Maintain proficiency by attending continuing education offerings in nursing practice and simulation.

  • Comply with annual health and CPR certification requirements, as directed by the Director of Nursing.

  • Perform other simulation clinical duties as designated by faculty.

o Physical demands are as needed to carry out the given duty; they are not excessive and are largely controlled by the employee.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

  • A wage of $25/hour will be paid for up to 20 hours/week, dependent upon need and schedules.
