The Position

Bargaining Unit: Local 21 - Supervisory Nurse

The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is recruiting Registered Nurses to fill three (3) Nursing Shift Coordinator vacancies at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center located in Martinez, CA.

Under direction, incumbents coordinate and supervise hospital nursing activities on an assigned shift in the absence of administrative personnel and ensure nursing staff levels are adequate to meet patient census. One of the primary duties includes scheduling relief nursing coverage for all units and for all shifts. The appointee will also act as a clinical resource person and represent nursing administration in the absence of the Nursing Program Managers; implement policies and procedures and interpret them to staff, patients and visitors; make recommendations to improve procedures; make rounds to oversee nursing care; and arrange for call-ins of medical and ancillary staff as necessary.

Typical Tasks

  • Supervises and coordinates hospital nursing activities on an assigned shift

  • Serves as a clinical resource for patient care needs

  • Acts as resource person in the absence of administration

  • Participates in special projects/assignments and quality improvement activities

  • Represents nursing administration on evening, night and weekend shifts in the absence of the Director of Inpatient Nursing Operations

  • Recommends policies and procedures to improve nursing services

  • Implements nursing administrative policies, procedures and standards for nursing staff

  • Schedules relief nursing coverage for all units and for all shifts

  • As needed, initiates disaster procedures in the absence of hospital administration

  • Ensures adherence to State regulations and Joint Committee on Accreditation of Hospital regulations

  • Arranges for call-ins of ancillary staff as necessary

  • Makes rounds to oversee nursing care

  • Interprets hospital policies and procedures to staff, patients and visitors

  • Provides and promotes excellence in customer service for both internal and external customers

Minimum Qualifications

License and Certification Required: Candidates must possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment: a current, valid and unrestricted Registered Nurse license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or CPR certification issued by the American Red Cross (Healthcare Provider); AND Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of full time, or its equivalent, experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care hospital, one (1) year of which was in the capacity of a Charge Nurse or Head Nurse or other supervisory/leadership role.

Substitution: Two (2) additional years of experience as a Charge Nurse or Head Nurse may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical examination may be required prior to the start of employment.

Selection Process

1.Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.

2.Training and Experience Evaluation: At the time of filing, within the supplemental questionnaire, candidates will be required to complete a training and experience questionnaire. Candidates that clearly meet the minimum qualifications, as described above, will have their training and experience responses evaluated. The training and experience questionnaire is designed to measure candidate's relevant education, training, and/or experience as it relates to the Nursing Shift Coordinator classification. (Weighted 100%).

TENTATIVE EXAM DATES

Supplemental questions will be evaluated on a monthly basis. Responses to the supplemental questions are submitted at the time of application filing.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
