About the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

The MICU is an 18-bed adult critical care unit located at Blake 7. Nurses on the MICU care for a variety of complex respiratory and medical patients. Notable diagnosis includes but not limited to sepsis, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, heme-oncology, cardiac, neurology, and infectious diseases such as H1N1(2005), suspect Ebola virus (2014) and the novel Corona Virus (2020).

  • The MICU culture can be best described for its teamwork and collaborative approach to care, embracing patient/family-centered care, and promoting staff professional development, and excellence in nursing.

  • The MICU is the first and the only critical care unit at MGH to receive the Beacon Award for Excellence awarded by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) in 2021.

  • Nurses in the MICU also seeks voluntary membership to the hospital's Biothreats Response Team and to the MGH Global Disaster Relief team.

Primary responsibilities of the Nurse Practice Specialist include:

Supporting independent nursing practice through collaborative, consultative and role modeling activities

  • Applying new technology, nursing theories, research findings and experiential knowledge to improve nursing practice

  • Responding to changes in clinical practice by planning, designing, implementing, or evaluating guidelines, protocols, and standards in collaboration with the nursing director, nursing staff and others.

  • Implementing and evaluating educational programs and practice changes based upon assessed learning needs of patients, families, and staff.

Qualifications

  • Massachusetts RN License required.

  • Master's degree in Nursing required.

  • Minimum of five years RN experience in a Medical ICU.

  • Knowledge expert in the care of the medical patient across the continuum.

  • Dedication to both bedside teaching and formal hospital education programs.

  • Ability to multi-task and to support staff nurses, who range from new graduates to those with 30 years of experience.

  • Ability to develop and support unit-based quality improvement/research projects.

a. Graduation from a graduate degree program with a clinical practicum designed to prepare the graduate for practice as a CNS that is approved by a national accrediting organization for academic programs acceptable to the Board; and

b. Successful completion of, at minimum, core content at the graduate level in advanced assessment, advanced pathophysiology and advanced pharmacotherapeutics.

c. Current CNS certification granted by a Board recognized certifying organization

OR-

Nursing Practice Specialist Requirements

a. Master's degree in Nursing or related field.

b. Relevant professional experience.

c. Certification in specialty area or willingness to obtain.
