MAIN FUNCTION:

The instructor is a registered nurse who teaches nursing courses in cooperation with other level instructors and is responsible for implementing the curriculum. She/he participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing courses within the level and in the development and evaluation of the total program.

Reports to the Systems Director of Education/SON

Salaried 10 Month Position

RESPONSIBILITIES:

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION

1.Assists in course design, implementation and evaluation to achieve the objectives of the level and the progress of the students.

2.Directs and supervises students in the nursing process in classroom and clinical settings.

3.Participates in theory and clinical teaching utilizing a variety of teaching strategies to facilitate student achievement of course and level objectives.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE

4.Serves as a role model in a clinical specialty demonstrating competence in clinical judgment, selected technical skills and appropriate knowledge base.

5.Actively pursues educational and professional development activities to foster own personal and professional growth and maintain knowledge of current educational principles.

SAFETY/LEGAL

6.Ensures that patient care/nursing practice in the clinical setting meets both safety and risk management standards and legal requirements of licensing boards and regulatory agencies.

BUDGET PLANNING/MONITORING

7.Assists in planning for capital budget items.

8.Monitors usage of equipment and supplies to help defray increased budgetary costs

COMMITTEE WORK

9.Actively participates in faculty and Medical Center committees and chairs committees as delegated.

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of Medical Center and school of nursing policies and applies the same in decision making.

NYSDOH/NLN/PONSI



  1. Maintains school standards to adhere to the standards set forth by the New York State

Department of Health, The National League of Nursing and the National Program of Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction, and ACEN (accrediting body).

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT



  1. Actively participates in research activities to promote growth and development of the program of studies and nursing as a profession.

  2. Participates in quality improvement activities to enhance the educational process and comply with standards of nursing care.

  1. Maintains accurate and timely review and documentation of student achievement of course and level objectives.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT



  1. Participates in faculty development programs actively sharing in the exchange of ideas and information in a manner which promotes the growth and development of the group.

  1. Assists Systems Director of Education/SON in identifying level goals and in developing, implementing and evaluating the plan of action to achieve these goals.

  2. Participates in total program evaluation to identify changes, which would benefit the educational process.

  3. Is able to identify potential or actual problems, plan appropriate actions and evaluate effectiveness of plan.


RESEARCH



  1. Remains aware of current nursing research and implements findings in nursing practice and education as applicable.

  1. Cooperates with Systems Director of Education/SON in long range planning for the School of Nursing, in concert with school philosophy, Medical Center mission and goals.

  1. Provides an environment conducive to the development and maintenance of professional standards of excellence.

  2. Is familiar with and demonstrates Quality in Action principles and participates in the process as appropriate.

  3. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  4. Provides age appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

  5. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer's needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Medical Center .

EDUCATION

Current RN registration in the State of New York. Master's Degree in nursing required.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Demonstrated competence in a specific area of nursing practice and theory. Demonstrated competence in principles specific to the teaching/learning process.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Light physical effort required. Moderate-heavy objects lifted, some reaching and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.

CARDIOPLUMONAERY Resuscitation (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

Basic Life Support required. ACLS, PALS required for faculty teaching in ER, ICU. NRP required for those

teaching in OB.
