This employee is a member of a healthcare team who assists in the delivery of psychiatric care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse on the inpatient psychiatric unit. Demonstrates competency with interventions and clinical judgment based on unit population and age specific needs.

Under minimal supervision this employee is responsible for assisting with the delivery of a variety of mental health treatment modalities, including group presentations, milieu therapy, recreational or activities therapy and behavior modification strategies. Provides assistance to the primary nurse in management of patient needs and support services for effective completion of daily routine and maintaining a functional environment for patients, visitors and staff. High school diploma or equivalent with 1 year patient care experience required, certification preferred or currently attending an accredited School of Nursing and has started nursing clinical rotation is required.

CPR certification or successful completion of CPR training upon hire. Full-time evening shifts available. Basic computer skills required. Full-time evening shift position available.

Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay. Please note: Applicants who are hired will be provided, and required to successfully complete a training course. This course is held over 4 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours. Responsibilities: * Assisting patients with activities of daily living including assisting with bathing, dressing and other hygiene needs * The Nursing Assistant provides routine patient care and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times. * Interacting and attending to patients and their families on a regular basis, to ensure patient satisfaction * Working hand in and hand with the nursing staff to report any changes in the patients well-being or changes in their conditions * Working directly with patients to re-position and assist them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed). * Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, collecting and measuring specimen * Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches. * Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units. * Depending upon the role, a Nursing Assistant may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins. Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent. If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program. * Successful completion of basic information system training. * Microcomputer experience preferred. * Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. * Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. * Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
