Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the initiation, implementation and supervision of treatment plans and education for chronic conditions.

  • Provide independent and collaborative specialty, comprehensive and therapeutic health care services, integrating the art and science of nursing into medical practice.

  • Provide educational management to patients and their families regarding disease processes and diagnostic tests.

  • Provide counseling to patients and their families for prevention of illness and maintenance of health, in order to assist patients in attaining physical, mental, and social well-being.

  • Supervisory positions will provide medical management functions to include the assessment of acute, non-acute and chronic clinical and psychological diagnosis, new patient intake/screening and performing history and physical examinations.

  • Supervisory positions will conduct lab and diagnostic studies; to include interpretation, ordering appropriate medications and treatments, providing staff education, and the initiation of a therapeutic plan in accordance with medical practice.

  • Supervisory positions will provide educational management to patients and their families regarding disease processes and diagnostic tests; the therapeutic regimen including medication, diet and follow-up care.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Advanced certification (e.g., Advanced Life Support) does not supersede BLS completion.

  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

  • Position may require employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.

  • Moderate to heavy lifting may be required.

  • Position may be designated as Emergency Essential.

  • This may be an obligated position.

  • Work schedule may require shift work or rotating shifts (evenings, weekends and holiday).

  • Permanent positions: Two year trial/probationary period may be required.

  • Temporary/Term positions: One year trial period may be required.

  • For supervisory positions, one-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Nurse/Supervisory Nurse (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner/Family Practice):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Positions: A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience GS-12: At least one full year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS-11. Professional Nursing Experience is defined as: performing physical examinations and either diagnosing diseases or prescribing medications.

Experience GS-13: At least one full year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS-12. Professional Nursing Experience is defined as: performing physical examinations, ordering or interpreting lab results, and either diagnosing diseases or prescribing medications.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Complies with current standards of anesthesia practice and care and provides anesthesia care that is within the scope of practice, as determined by demonstrated competency, licensure, and clinical privileges delineated by the MTF. Responsibilities CRNA includes administration of anesthesia by inhalation, endotracheal intubation, regional (including ultrasound guided), intravenous, topical and administration of all levels of sedation for pediatric and adult patients; this includes pre-, intra, and postoperative evaluation, treatment and the support of life functions and vital organs under stress of anesthetic, surgical and other procedures. CRNAs provide pain management and consultation. The CRNA may provide consultation, collaborative management or referral to other health care providers as indicated by the health status of the patient. Diagnosis and Management * Prescribes medication in accordance with Military Treatment Facility pharmacy and therapeutics * Mechanical ventilator management (invasive and noninvasive) * Central Venous pressure monitoring * Initiation and management of patient controlled analgesia intrathecal and epidural Procedures * Arterial catheter placement * Endotracheal intubation * Central venous catheter insertions * Ultrasound guided Nerve blocks for upper and lower extremity surgery and/or pain control * Epidural/spinal placement for labor or surgical management Anesthesia * General anesthesia * Spinal and/or epidural anesthesia * Topical and local infiltration anesthesia * Emergency cricothyroidotomy * Peripheral nerve block anesthesia * Regional nerve block anesthesia * Ultrasound guidance for vascular access and regional anesthesia Procedure Advanced privileges * Advanced nerve block techniques. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) (Copy of certification required) with at least 3 years experience. * (Homeland Security Presidential Directive) HSPD-12 is required. * Graduate of a school of professional nursing, approved by a legally designated state accrediting agency and hold current registration as a registered professional nurse. Copy of certification and license required. * Be a graduate of an approved program of nurse anesthesia accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Program and Schools or its predecessor. * Licensure: possess current, active, valid, unrestricted license in at least one U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, Territory, or jurisdiction. * Prior to the expiration of their CRNA certification, be re-certified by the Council on Re-certification of Nurse Anesthetists. SPECIAL SKILLS * Ability to effectively read, write and speak English in order to communicate with all patients and other healthcare providers. * Possess evidence of continuing nursing education which maintains skills and knowledge in the nursing specialty. * Shall possess current certification in American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support(ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) at the time of employment. Certifications shall be maintained in a current status at all times.
