Position Information

Nursery Worker I (BC-05)

$4,471/month

Propagates, cultivates, fertilizes and otherwise cares for plants in a nursery; and performs other related duties as required.

Nursery Worker II (WS-05)

$4,789/month

Supervises and participates in the propagation, cultivation, fertilization and care of plants in a nursery; and performs other related duties as required.

Related duties include the physical maintenance of assigned grounds.

There are multiple vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation which may be filled at either the Nursery Worker I (BC-05) or Nursery Worker II (WS-05) level. Work schedule is from Monday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but may vary depending on the position.

May be required to work after hours, evenings, weekends, or holidays to accommodate work load, special projects and events, and emergency callouts. Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

The following are general descriptions of the Nursery Worker I and Nursery Worker II positions within the Department of Parks and Recreation. These positions are either assigned to the Botanical Gardens Branch or Horticultural Services Branch.

Nursery Worker I (BC-05): $4,471/month. Propagates, cultivates, fertilizes and otherwise cares for plants in a nursery; and performs other related duties as required.

Nursery Worker II (WS-05): $4,789/month. Supervises and participates in the propagation, cultivation, fertilization and care of plants in a nursery; and performs other related duties as required.

Botanical Gardens positions: Exercises a general knowledge of horticultural practices in the botanical garden system, such as: propagating, planting, landscaping, maintaining and caring for trees and plants and physical maintenance of the botanical garden.

Makes minor emergency repairs and reports major defects and/or malfunctions of all equipment and machinery. Answers questions from the public on identity and care of plants and flowers. Acts as building custodian as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Special work requirements include exposure to horticultural chemicals, working on steep, wet grades, possibly in water (e.g., lake, stream, or basin), rocky uneven slopes and low precipices, etc., wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Horticulture Services positions: Performs a variety of work such as propagating, cultivating, fertilizing, pruning, planting, care and maintenance of plants and trees in nurseries and tree farms and landscaping and maintenance of lawns, planting strips, traffic medials and islands, park grounds, bikeways and gardens and other areas under the maintenance jurisdiction of this branch.

Performs pesticide applications, tasks related to keeping assigned facilities clean and neat, daily cleaning and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, and other related duties as assigned. Special work requirements include handling and using chemicals, and working in areas treated with chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). May work solely in remote secluded mountainous areas, where there is no drinking water, restroom, or electricity.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Nursery Worker I: Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants.

Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation; practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work; plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them; various commercial fertilizers and their use, etc. And the ability to do grafting, air-layering and seed germination; identify various plants; recognize common plant diseases, insects and pests; use common tools and equipment used in nursery work; and understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Nursery Worker II: Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants.

Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation; practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work; plant diseases and pests and effective methods for their control; various commercial fertilizers and insecticides and their use, etc. And the ability to do grafting, air-layering and seed germination; identify various plants; recognize common plant diseases, insects and pests; use common tools and equipment used in nursery work; give and follow oral and written instructions; and supervise the work of others.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:

Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State driver's license, as required.

The current vacancies may require the following licenses and certificates:

  • Valid Hawaii driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.

  • Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), prior to appointment.

  • Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test, prior to appointment.

  • Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate, prior to appointment.

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certificates, prior to completion of probation.

  • Forklift Certification, prior to completion of probation.

  • Valid Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class A with proper endorsements, prior to completion of probation.

  • Certificate for Commercial Applicators of Restricted Pesticides, prior to completion of probation.

NOTE: Some of the above certificates are obtained during the pre-employment medical evaluation process. Any required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above, and maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.
