Nursery Technician

Position Summary

The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden (MEMBG) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks a part-time Nursery Technician.

Incumbent will be working on weekends and holidays and is responsible for the day to day work of opening and/or closing the garden, maintaining nursery plants, and garden collection maintenance. The position includes responsibilities such as watering, weeding, pest monitoring and caring for our collections. In addition to hands on plant care duties, incumbent may spend a portion of their time assisting with garden projects such as data recording.

Incumbent is to do other duties related to the role of a nursery technician as assigned by the assistant Director, Garden Manager, or Sr. Nursery Technician.

Salary & Compensation

Qualifications

2+ years Experience working in a botanical garden or professional nursery (Preferred) Ability to work outside under varying weather conditions (heat, sun, cold, rain, wind). (Required) Ability to maneuver through the garden and willingness to work closely with living plants. (Required) Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. (Required) Ability to work independently and in a group setting. (Required) High level of attention to detail, eagerness to learn and a sense of humor. (Required) Experience in or strong interest in learning about horticulture and botany. (Required) Experience in a professional nursery. (Preferred) Experience growing a wide range of plant species. (Preferred) Basic plant identification skills (common weeds vs. collection plants). (Required) Experience with data recording and management. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's or advanced degree in horticulture, botany or biology and / or equivalent training / experience. (Preferred)
