GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under supervision of a Registered Nurse and following hospital policies and procedures, performs various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs routine bedside nursing activities including: bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating, moving and turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property.

  • Assists in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches and sitz baths or pericare.

  • Takes vital signs and records intake and output.

  • Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.

  • Performs more complex nursing procedures and treatments after theoretical preparation and supervised clinical experience.

  • Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as they occur.

  • Performs assessments and documents accurate, complete and concise patient information on appropriate forms, including flow sheets, activity records, etc.

  • Participates in nursing staff conferences, in-services and educational opportunities.

  • Ensures the optimum utilization of personnel, supplies and equipment.

  • Provides copy of current school transcript to supervisor at the end of each marking period to confirm continued eligibility.

  • Assists in admitting, transferring and discharging patients.

  • Assists in pre-operative and post-operative care

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:

  • Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing.

o External hires: Must be enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing Program (BSN) required.

o Internal BH employees: May be enrolled in a BSN or ADN program. ADN graduates will be required to sign a BSN completion agreement upon hire/placement in a graduate nurse position.

  • RN from another state awaiting Michigan Licensure (or) Graduate Nurse from accredited school of nursing awaiting retake of NCLEX or awaiting results of the last exam.

B. Work Experience:

  • Requires evidence of successful completion of adult medical-surgical rotations theory and clinical.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

  • Requires current BLS certification.

Treatment consists of exercise, modalities, and massage mobility; training and patient family education. Participates in a multi-disciplinary team concept to monitor patient outcome. Essential Duties * Conducts initial evaluation of patients; review physician referrals and medical records; observes and tests patients; correlates data into an evaluation of the patient's status. * Establishes goals and objectives of treatment; develops a treatment plan for patients using evaluation results, based on goals and on professional judgement and established procedures. * Discusses evaluation and treatment with patients and their families to allay anxiety and elicit cooperation; instructs patients/families in physical therapy treatments to be continued at home. * Implements treatment programs by administering physical therapy treatments (goniometric joint measurement, muscle function, reflex and sensory testing, gait analysis, therapeutic exercise, hydrotherapy, etc.); monitors progress, reestablishing patient goals and revising treatment plan as needed; makes recommendations for special equipment or treatments that would enhance the patient's progress. * Documents status and progress of patients, including goals and treatment plan, in the medical record in a timely fashion; confers with medical and nursing staff regarding patient progress; coordinates care with outside agencies (special schools, other hospitals, etc.). * Performs administrative duties associated with patient care, i.e., scheduling, attendance records, charging, studies, projects, etc. * Attends in-services, conferences, and seminars to keep informed of developments in the field of physical therapy and to maintain technical skills. * Responsible for oversight and performance appraisal of physical therapy students as assigned. * Assigns daily work assignment, assesses performance, and identifies training needs of Physical Therapy Technicians and Physical Therapy Assistants. . Standard Qualifications: * Education / Training: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy. * Work Experience: Requires a successful completion of three month's orientation. * Contacts and Communications: Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills in daily communication with patients and their families; ability to communicate patient care effectively with physician and other licensed/non-licensed department and hospital staff. Ability to interact with empathy, tact and understanding with patients and their families. Ability to effectively present complex and technical information to a varied audience. Strong motivational skills to assist patients in following and adhering to plan of care. * Analytical Demands: Requires the ability to conduct patient evaluations, interpret results and design effective and creative treatment plans. * Computer Skills: Requires basic keyboarding skills and ability to effective interact with hospital and electronic medical records information systems.
