Nurse Supervisor

Responsible for staffing and operations of the Student Health Center (Council Bluffs) which provides nursing care for Deaf and Blind students who are enrolled in programs at Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD)  (www.iowaschoolforthedeaf.org) and Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) (www.iesbvi.org).

Under supervision from the Director of Student Life, renders nursing care to patients within the Health Center.  Supervises other Health Center staff members.

General Nursing Duties:

  • Observes and reports symptoms and conditions of patients, including general physical and mental state.

  • Assists physician with examinations and in carrying out medical procedures.

  • Provides emergency medical care and treatment to students and staff.

  • Provides medical care and supervision to students who are confined to the Health Center.

  • Administers care to acutely ill patients.

  • Administers medication and treatments and notes patients' reactions to same.

  • Orders and restocks medication and other medical supplies.

  • Coordinates with other departments on Campus to ensure continuity of care for each student and to ensure that special needs of students are being met.

  • Communicates with parents in order to obtain information relative to each student's medical history and also to provide follow-up information to parents.  Seeks and obtains parental consent to treat students.

  • Utilizes correct nursing procedures and promotes the comfort and safety of all patients.

  • Maintains various reports, records, and documentation relating to health care and medical history of students.  Plans, develops and implements health care plans for students including individual health care plans as required by IDEA.

  • With other School Administrator, participates in school wide activities that address the overall effectiveness of school programs.  Serves on the Strategic Planning Committee and School Improvement Committee.

  • Educates students and staff about health care issues and serves as a resource for students and staff.

  • Performs a variety of cleaning and sanitation duties, including changing and laundering towels, bed linens, students' clothing, etc; cleaning and disinfecting medical equipment, tabletops, and countertops; and other related duties.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Supervises registered nurses and other Health Center staff.  Participates in interviewing of staff and makes recommendations for hiring.  Provides orientation and training to employees.  Handles disciplinary matters.  Conducts employee performance evaluations.

  • Serves as one of the School's Level I investigators and is one of the staff who is responsible for investigating incidents of suspected child abuse.

  • Plans, develops and evaluates the School's health care programs.

  • Schedules and assists with annual health care screenings of students.

  • Schedules doctor, dental, occupational therapy and physical therapy appointments for students and coordinates transportation, chaperoning and interpreting services for the same.

  • Represents the Health Center at various campus meetings, including Evaluation Team meetings.

  • Serves as a member of the Iowa Children's Hearing Loss Center.

  • Prepares and delivers lectures and presentations to staff and students on a variety of health-related subjects.

  • Gives tours of the Health Center to visitors.

Hours:

Typically 7 A.M.-3 P.M. Monday

  • Friday following the school year calendar with occasional weekend shifts, with availability 24/7 to support evening and overnight  nurse and to ensure nursing coverage at all times while students are on campus.  195 work days.

Extra work days/pay may be scheduled during summer months depending on summer programming needs.   Expected start date August 2024.

A successful candidate will bring or have the ability and desire to learn:

  • Passion for pursuing common goals in pursuit of public service

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including developed interpersonal skills

  • American Sign Language

  • Experience working with individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired is a plus.

  • Experience working within a K-12 educational setting a plus.

  • Salary Range - $59,139.60-$91,050 for 195 work days

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

 1) All of the following (a, b, and c): 

     a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and 

     b. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing; and 

     c. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability. 



  1. All of the following (a and b): 

      a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and 

     b. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in nursing. 



  1. All of the following (a, b, and c): 

     a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and 

     b. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and 

     c. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
