This position will receive a short-staffing temporary pay differential of 8% from July 1st 2023 - June 30th 2024

This work unit provides comprehensive services and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This work unit's focus is on providing services and supports an active learning approach. The work unit is also focused on creating and promoting a safe and healthy environment for individuals supported. This work unit provides 24-hour treatment services that are in compliance with State and Federal regulation.

The Wheat Ridge Regional Center is looking to hire motivated, hard-working individuals to provide direct support services to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Some of the individuals we serve have high medical needs while others need significant support around behavioral and mental health needs. Description of Job

Purpose of Position:

  • Directly supervises assigned unit nurses that includes signature authority that impact pay as well as doing the PMAP plans and appraisals, Corrective Action Authority and starting hiring process, interview applicants and recommend hire for nurses and corrective action authority for performance problems.

  • Directs coordination of day-to-day shift operations and work outcomes.

  • Determines the caseloads of the Nurse and determines the work protocols, instructions and procedures for the nursing unit.

  • Supervises implementation of the nursing processes provided by assigned unit nurses.

  • Supervises the nursing skills / health services provided by the direct care staff who are Licensed Psychiatric Technicians (LPT's), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's), Certified Nurse Aides (C.N.A's) and Qualified Medication Administration Personnel (QMAP) as regulated in their scope of practice governed by the Board of Nursing through day to day communications, and documentation review.

  • Conducts LPT medication administration competency evaluations as needed for medication error follow-up, ICF-IID audit preparation, and to evaluate effectiveness of training such as for a staff who is given refresher training in gastric tube medication administration who normally does not work with g-tubes.

  • As a Unit Supervisor, this position oversees the RN supervision of the agency direct-care providers (LPT's, LPN's, C.N.A.'s and QMAP's).

  • Ensures regulatory compliance of health services in accordance with the LPT, LPN, C.N.A. and QMAP scope of practice.

  • Provides and supervises the provision of clinical instruction to LPT's, LPN's and QMAP's regarding administration of selected treatments and medications and the implementation of Health Services policies and procedures.

  • Identify, report and correct medical errors that include medication and treatment errors and failure to follow proper nursing procedures. Institute personnel action as needed.

  • Provider leadership to the nursing team including after hours as needed

  • Providing direct nursing services to the clients

Work environment:

The work unit exists to provide skilled nursing supports and services to approximately 100 intellectually disabled individuals residing in group homes scattered throughout the Denver Metro area (mainly Jefferson county). The Wheat Ridge Regional Center (WRRC) exists to serve individuals who qualify for active treatment services as defined in Intermediate Care Facilities rules and regulations for individuals with Intellectually Disabilities (ICF-IID). The nursing unit exists to provide 24/7 services to these individuals who have profound and severe disabilities with a high level of medical needs, and/or have significant behavioral and psychiatric challenges.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Registered Nurse License from the State of Colorado or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact

AND

  • Three (3) years of professional experience as a registered nurse.

Substitution:

  • There is no substitution for the required license.
  • A master's or doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may substitute for up to two years of required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in long term care or assisted living facility

  • Experience in long term care or assisted living facility

  • Experience as a supervisor

  • Experience working with individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities

  • Experience working with individuals with mental health diagnoses

  • Experience multi-tasking and prioritizing assignments

  • Caring, supportive, accountable leader

  • Leader willing to work on an interdisciplinary team and problem-solve solutions to improve services

Conditions of employment:

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.

  • Must pass a Colorado Bureau of Investigations and a Federal Bureau of Investigations background check as a condition of employment. Included in the background check is a current and/or previous employer check. Your current and/or previous employers within the past 10 years at a minimum must be listed on your job application (most recent in descending order), even if the job or duties are unrelated to the position for which you are applying. Incomplete employer information (address, phone number, and supervisor) or omission of former employers may result in a disqualification of your application.

  • Must pass a Drug Screen.

  • Must pass TB test.

  • Must possess a Colorado Driver's License.

  • Must maintain a current and active Registered Nurse License.

  • Must maintain a current CPR Card and perform CPR adequate compressions and ventilations per CPR guidelines.

  • This position is "Essential Service Designation": you will be required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

  • This position has shift work: day, evening and night shifts to include holiday and weekends as needed.

  • This position requires on-call work on weekends.
