School Nurse Supervisor - Job Description

Job Title: School Nurse Supervisor

Work Year: Full-time, 186 days

Work Day: 8 hours per day, hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Location: Canton High School

Position Summary:

The Canton School Nurse Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising and evaluating nursing and health services for the Canton school system. School nurse supervisor based in the high school is responsible for health programs in all Canton schools. Supervises school nurses, licensed practical nurses and school health aides as they implement school activities within the scope of their practice.

The school nurse supervisor also reports to the Director of Pupil Personnel in the Canton school system. Health policies and practices for the school health program are developed according to state regulation and must be approved by the school medical director appointed by the Board of Education. All reasonable steps to ensure the quality of the school health program for students within the scope of this job description are taken.

Job Function as School Nurse Supervisor:

  • Develops and implements health policies and procedures in collaboration with the school administration, school medical advisor and board of education.

  • Supervises nursing and school health staff in the delivery of care through the school health program.

  • Develops policy and protocol defining role and responsibility for licensed practical nurse to perform duties under the supervision of a registered nurse.

  • Monitors staffing patterns, substitutes and nursing coverage of each school.

  • Provides for adequate orientation of staff.

  • Conducts school health needs assessment to identify current health programs of the school community and need for new ones.

  • Evaluates the outcome of ongoing health programs and communicates findings to the school administration and board of education.

  • Arranges staff meeting as needed and coordinates programs in all three Canton schools.

  • Participates in the interview process for prospective school staff and makes recommendations.

  • Evaluates competency of nursing staff and other health room staff using performance standards and completes performance evaluations annually.

  • Provides timely feedback to staff.

  • Develops and implements the payroll process for school health room staff.

  • Participates in development of budget to meet program needs and manages of school health services accordingly.

  • Develops education programs for health room staff and school personnel as needed.

  • Promotes student, staff and school safety through health education.

  • Provides school nurse services in the middle/high school.

  • Uses effective communication skills in interpersonal relations with students, family, teachers, school administration and coworkers.

  • Demonstrates competency in nursing procedures and emergency care.

  • Actively engages in problem resolution.

  • Allocates resources based on student needs and resources available.

  • Completes employee performance appraisals according to standards and policies

  • Provides appropriate feedback on employee performance.

  • Abides by principles of Universal Precautions and infection control policies.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of state and federal laws regarding special education students, medication administration and delivery of school health services.

  • Meets annual contact hour requirements for professional development.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires occasional lifting of greater than 80 pounds, often combined with bending and turning. Requires ability to walk up and down stairs. Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal limits. Requires use of office equipment such as computers, telephones, fax machine, and copy machines. Requires use of medical equipment in the clinical setting. Requires eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires frequent prolonged standing, walking and ability to perform physical labor for up to an 8 hour day.

Typical Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a school setting. Contact with students, families, school administration and staff, health professionals, physicians, police, clergy, ambulance crews, pharmacists, venders, and volunteers. May be required to work with uncooperative and combative students. Exposure to communicable disease, medicinal preparations and toxic substances in the school setting.

Employment Requirements:

Knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Knowledge and competency in the nursing process, quality assurance, infection control. Ability to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document care and instruction. Demonstrates personal integrity and empathy and fosters such in others.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing Program

BSN from accredited college or university

Certification/Licensure:

Current Connecticut License in good standing as a Registered Nurse.

Current CPR and First Aid certification.

Experience:

Two years experience in acute or community care facility.

One year in pediatric/adolescent care preferred.
