The staff nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who is responsible for providing compassionate care to and assessment of ambulatory patients within the Department of Urology. The Staff Nurse is responsible for screening patients, providing patients pre- and post-operative teaching, assisting with office procedures, and verifying test results. The Staff Nurse will work collaboratively with the members of the care team to develop treatment plans that will achieve optimal patient outcomes
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Services
o Administers medications/injections when necessary
o Assists with office-based procedures when necessary
o Performs pre-operative teaching and answers relevant questions
o Performs post-operative teaching and answers relevant questions
o Facilitates clinical sessions for physicians by reviewing the relevant patient history, physical examinations and reason for the visit, and records this information within the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Reviews patient medication lists needed for prescriptions and other supporting clinical data necessary to support clinical care
o Returns patient calls that require clinical input
o Reaches out to patients on a case-by-case basis, or as instructed by the supervising provider
o Staffs nurse triage phone line, as assigned, fielding clinical calls from patients
o Triages patients to appropriate caregivers based on level of urgency and patient needs
Administrative
o Maintains Commonwealth of Massachusetts and MGH compliance requirements
Operational Management
Active participation in the development and sharing of best practices through interdepartmental meetings
Active participation in Continuous Improvement and Operational Excellence efforts
Citizenship/Professionalism
o Practices medicine in accordance with all regulatory requirements
o Practices at the highest ethical levels in accordance with department and hospital mission/vision

Maintains the standards and education requirements specific to the position and licensure

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Ability to assess medical history of patient, as well as patient concerns, and to determine any limitations/contraindications
Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately.
Knowledge of locations of emergency equipment and procedures
Knowledge and ability to deliver intravesical therapies
Knowledge of universal precautions
Effective interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to provide compassionate care to patients
Ability to lift over 25 lbs. Possess knowledge of and practices proper lifting mechanics
Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development, and of patients of all age groups. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients service
Knowledge of compliance with MGH, JCAHO, HIPAA, ACGME and other regulatory bodies' standards
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS: Specify minimum credentials and clearly indicate if required or preferred.
Required: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
