The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Specialist in Nursing Administration with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute located in Miami, Florida.

The Nurse Specialist assesses a healthcare facility's nursing practice and its impact on patient outcomes. Moreover, the incumbent directs clinical staff in delivering patient care programs and acts as a change agent, mentor, and leader. An employee in this position ensures that the clinical staff maintains an established competency level.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs medical tests in patients to diagnose their health condition.

  • Interprets laboratory test results of patients.

  • Recommends treatment plan for patients based on diagnosis.

  • Counsels individuals and patients on positive health practices.

  • Provides the latest cost-effective nursing practices.

  • Collaborates with other team of experts to outline best treatment for patients.

  • Performs holistic evaluation of specialty population, making use of enhanced proven techniques and procedures to achieve better results.

  • Implements the improvement of patient care, and healthcare policies and resources.

  • Mentors other healthcare professionals by functioning as a preceptor or coordinating preceptors for visiting professionals, students, new graduates, and orienteers.

  • Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations, and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited institution.

Master's degree preferred.

Certification and Licensing: Valid Florida RN license

Certification in relevant specialty or field: ACLS, PALS, BLS required.

Experience: Minimum 3 years of nursing experience. Experience in perioperative and ambulatory care in ophthalmology preferred.

Additional Department Specific Functions

The Nurse Specialist will play a pivotal role in ensuring the accurate collection, analysis, and interpretation of healthcare data to improve patient care outcomes, enhance operational efficiency, and support evidence-based decision-making. This position requires a combination of nursing expertise and proficiency in data management, analytics, and healthcare informatics.

Data Collection and Validation:

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to identify, collect, and validate clinical data from various sources, including electronic health records (EHR), patient charts, and other healthcare systems.

  • Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards and organizational protocols.

  • Implement strategies to streamline data collection processes and minimize errors.

Data Analysis and Interpretation:

  • Utilize analytical tools and software to analyze healthcare data and identify trends, patterns, and insights relevant to patient care, quality improvement, and operational efficiency.

  • Interpret data findings and provide actionable recommendations to healthcare teams to optimize patient outcomes and enhance clinical workflows.

  • Work with the IT department to generate reports, dashboards, and visualizations to communicate key metrics and performance indicators to stakeholders.

Quality Improvement Initiatives:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement quality improvement initiatives based on data-driven insights and evidence-based practices.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of quality improvement interventions and recommend adjustments as needed.

  • Participate in ongoing performance improvement activities and initiatives to enhance the delivery of healthcare services.

Training and Education:

  • Provide training and education to healthcare staff on documentation best practices, evidence-based practices, and new standards and processes.

  • Serve as a resource and subject matter expert on specialty and process improvement topics, and regulatory compliance.

Research and Innovation:

  • Stay current with advancements in nursing practice to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.

  • Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.

The Nurse Specialist position will focus on Clinical Excellence for BPEI Main and satellites. This includes nursing quality, policy and procedures, nursing accreditations, Magnet, and Press Ganey.

The role will ensure clinical excellence aligning with Magnet requirements such as but not limited to:

  • Establish quality metrics and outcomes,

  • Development of staff and leadership,

  • Create innovation in ophthalmic nursing,

  • Promote evidence-based research for the nurses,

  • Disseminate Press Ganey
