Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant
The George Washington University Hospital is seeking an Advanced Practitioner (Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) for the Cardiac Surgery Program. The PA/NP provides critical care and step down care for Cardiac Surgery patients, including admissions, consults, and discharges.
The PA/NP will order and interpret labs; participate in chest tube placement; manage Swan Ganz catheters, intra-aortic balloon pumps, drains, and pacemakers; place central venous lines and arterial lines; order appropriate imaging; present patients at rounds; perform physical examinations; create treatment plans; prescribe medications in accordance with guidelines; etc. The PA/NP monitors patient outcomes and initiates/participates in quality improvement activities. This role serves as a primary liaison for all disciplines and services interfacing with the Cardiac Surgery Service.
Shifts are 12 hours, providing coverage for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. The NP /PA will be credentialed according to the medical staff regulations and will be under the supervision of appropriately credentialed attending physicians.

NP: A master's degree in nursing and completion of an approved course of study as a Nurse Practitioner. Current ANCC certification and D.C. licensure as a NP is necessary.
PA: A master's degree as a Physician Assistant and completion of an approved course of study as a Physician Assistant. Current NCCPA certification and D.C. licensure as a Physician Assistant is necessary.
Some previous experience is recommended but not required.
Excellent communication skills required.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.
Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the hospital.
Must be organized with exceptional clinical assessment and decision making skills. Must be able to do math calculations and input data into the computer.
