Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, evaluate, treat and manage acute and chronic illness, disease and injury, independently and/or in consultation/referral with another health care provider.

  • Obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations.

  • Order, perform and interpret diagnostic studies.

  • Prescribe medications as appropriate under regulations of the DEA.

  • Prescribe physical therapy and other rehabilitative treatments.

  • Provide family planning education and services.

  • Provide health screening and immunizations.

  • Provide primary care services, health maintenance care and annual physicals.

  • Perform minor surgeries and procedures such as biopsies, suturing, lesion removals, splinting and immobilizing.

  • Counsel and educate patients about health behaviors, self care skills and treatment options.

  • Teach nursing staff, medical assistants and others clinical instructions as required.

  • Assist in the clinical instruction and supervision of medical, nurse practitioner, nursing and physician assistant students.

  • Confer with various UNE /UNECOM personnel to consult/refer on specific patients, discuss plans, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems, and other related tasks.

  • Stay abreast of relevant medical research, technology, and related issues by attending continuing education courses/conferences, professional meetings, reading professional journals and maintaining membership in professional organizations.

  • Maintain a current CPR BLS/ACLS certification as appropriate.

  • Understand and comply with Universal Precautions, MSDS and HAZCOM policies and procedures as part of UNE's comprehensive OSHA compliance program.

  • Understand and comply with UNE Safety manual paying special attention to Responsibilities Section Chapter on Blood Borne Pathogens, and Chapter on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Understand and comply with the policies and procedures of Student Health.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A graduate of an accredited Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner Program, with previous college health experience preferred, but not required.

  • Current and appropriate advanced practice license and approval to practice from the State of Maine Board of Nursing.

  • Broad base of technical knowledge and skills needed to perform all assigned clinical, administrative and academic duties.

  • Current CPR BLS certification.

  • Ability to mentor/teach and precept students of various professional programs.

  • Ability to speak clearly and comfortably.

  • Ability to use tact, discretion and sensitivity in dealing with college students.

  • Good interviewing and counseling skills.

  • Ability to explain medical problems and treatments in accurate and understandable lay language.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with other providers, hospitals and staff and others outside of the UNE system.
