Summary:
To work collaboratively as a licensed and credentialed independent practitioner with other members of the healthcare team to provide comprehensive health assessment, diagnosis and treatment of individuals with acute and sub-acute illnesses consistent with privileges granted. Functions as the Surgical Assistant under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon until the conclusion of the operative procedure. Does not function concurrently as scrub nurse. Provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient team members in maintaining standards of professional nursing practice in the surgical setting. Delegated the clinical administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary to carry out assigned duties. Scope of practice and delineation of Nurse Practitioner/ RNFA privileges, defined by NYS Department of Education, within the NP and RNFA roles, and are credentialed and approved by the Chairman, Department of Surgery, Chairmen of Credentials Committee, and Medical Executive Committee.
Responsibilities:
EDUCATION
Certified as a Nurse Practitioner with the New York State Education Department
Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing with a Master's Degree as a Nurse Practitioner from an approved program with recorded certification
Maintains a current New York State Professional Registered Nurse License
Infection Control Training certificate
Board certified by either AACN or AANP
Successful completion of approved RNFA program that meets "AORN recommendation education, meets requirements of statutes, regulations, and institutional policies relevant to RN first assistants standards for RN first assistant programs" and is accepted by the Certification Board of Perioperative nursing.
RNFA Certification preferred on hire, however, required within two (2) years of hire date
BLS certification required
ACLS certification preferred
EXPERIENCE
Three (3) to five (5) years as clinically practicing Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner preferred
Prior RNFA experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Appropriately and safely operates multiple instruments and equipment during the peri-operative phase
Good mental and physical health
Documentation of proficiency in peri-operative nursing practice as both a scrub and circulating nurse
Ability to apply principles of asepsis and infection control
Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, patho-physiology, and operative technique related to the operative procedures in which the Nurse Practitioner RNFA assists
Ability to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations
Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective action
Ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operative team
Ability to demonstrate skill in behaviors unique to the Nurse Practitioner RNFA
Participates in educational conferences and upgrades and maintains professional knowledge and skills related to the area of responsibility
Maintains confidentiality and understands the legal aspects of the job function; adheres to Hospital policies and procedures
Role includes a variety of problems to be solved under general guidelines, and calls for a variety of decisions, some of which are complex and must be referred to a resource person
Assists in directing a small group of associates performing similar or related tasks of a semi-skilled nature. Instructs associates, assigns, evaluates performance and maintains efficiency of staff assigned
Must have good verbal and written communication skills
Communication skills which may be inclusive of approach, tone of voice, speed of communication, respectfulness and non verbal communication
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Practices in the roles of Nurse Practitioner and RNFA according to State Nurse Practice Act, Regulatory Codes of New York State Department of Health and Joint Commission standards.

Frequent sitting, standing, walking.Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
Works in surgical area and patient rooms throughout the facility
Working hours are varied, works beyond normal working hours, weekend coverage as necessary
Exposure to infectious diseases and uses appropriate personal protective equipment; subject to environmental conditions in the operating room.
Normal heat, light space, and safe working environment; typical of clinical care units
