The Stroke Program at the University of Minnesota seeks 1 board-eligible / board-certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join their clinical stroke & telestroke practice at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) and Fairview Southdale Hospital. This is a 1.0 FTE position.
Stroke providers from the University of Minnesota cover the assessment and management of stroke patients at two comprehensive stroke centers, UMMC and Fairview Southdale. In addition, for stroke patients located in spoke hospitals, telestroke is used to guide treatment from the emergency department arrival through the inpatient stay. Through telestroke, our stroke team works with spoke hospitals to deliver superior stroke care throughout the region. Our mission goes beyond providing best stroke care and includes leading stroke education efforts for our patients and partners in healthcare, and advancing stroke treatment through clinical research. Responsibilities include:
Practice in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting with significant telestroke utilization. APPs have the opportuntiy for independent practice in conjunction with 24-7 fellowship-trained physician specialist collaborators.
Evaluate and treat stroke patients with a focus on emergent stroke interventions, diagnostic stroke evaluation, and secondary stroke prevention.
Utilize telestroke to perform clinical care at remote partnering hospitals.
Participate in staff education, advance quality improvement initiatives and develop clinical pathway protocols
Day shift, averaging 5 shifts per week with alternating weekend coverage, approximately every 3rd or 4th weekend. There is scheduling flexibility, as long as continuous daily coverage (in conjunction with our current Stroke & Telestroke APP team) is maintained
A qualified candidate will be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and formal Nurse Practitioner training program or a graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program.
Have a current MN RN license and be approved or eligible by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges or a current PA license with prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice.
Be certified through ANCC or eligible for ANCC national exam or through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.
Ability to work both independently and in teams, including those located at remote telestroke partner sites.
Previous stroke care experience or neurology training is preferred, however, otherwise excellent candidates who are enthusiastic about building a pre-eminent stroke healthcare network are encouraged to apply.
Proficiency with using electronic medical records in order to perform remote consultation and maintain detailed records of stroke care provided.
Teaching and educational focus with outreach to our partner hospital stroke teams and communities to improve stroke care across the healthcare spectrum
A strong desire to enroll patients in pivotal clinical trials and lead local stroke research efforts is a plus, this includes the opportunity to present findings at local and national conferences.
