The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age appropriate care to both well and/or ill patients. The Nurse Practitioner educates patients and/or intervenes in acute or chronic illness.
The Nurse Practitioner practices within the guidelines of the unit department, and institution and in accordance with the Nurse Practitioner- Physician Written Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Nurse Practitioner will evaluate adult and pediatric patients who are undergoing elective surgery to ensure they are optimized for surgery from an anesthesia standpoint. This will be accomplished by performing a complete history and physical and the Nurse Practitioner will document the visit in the electronic medical record.
The Nurse Practitioner will review available medical information and will place orders for additional laboratory and radiological studies required prior to surgery. If there are abnormal results the Nurse Practitioner will work in collaboration with the Anesthesiologist to determine additional testing. If abnormal results persist, the Nurse Practitioner will notify surgeon or their designee to determine next course of action (i.e. delaying/canceling case or moving case to another surgical location).
Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
Minimum 3 years' experience in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty preferred. Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Current CPR certification required.
Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Prefer experience in ICU, OR or Pre-OP/PACU . Completion of accredited Family or Adult NP program

Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health.
Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
Able to operate patient care equipment, computers, and general office equipment.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
