The Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Immunology seeks a Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical care, including evaluation, long-term management, and comprehensive care of patients in the Primary Immunodeficiency Center. This includes history and physical exam; performing and interpreting diagnostic tests; reviewing records prior and after the clinic visit; coordination of care; making referrals as indicated; monitoring patients while on therapy.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the evaluation and management of patients in the clinic and hospital setting with penicillin or other drug allergies, including allergy skin testing. Work on becoming an essential member of a drug allergy screening program.

  • Performs phlebotomy as necessary and obtains blood specimens for blood tests.

  • Assist in the evaluation and management of patients with allergic disorders.

  • Assist in building and monitoring patient's database, including patient serum samples, data collection, electronic database.

  • Receives and triages clinically related phone calls, intervenes appropriately with modifications to doctors and patients as needed.

  • Perform procedures in the Allergy clinic, such as allergy skin testing, allergy immunotherapy, pulmonary function testing.

  • With a strong focus on quality and patient satisfaction, lead and participate in patient safety and quality improvement interventions, protocol and policy development, education of other providers in best practices for management of Allergy/Immunology conditions.

  • Document clinic notes and other pertinent data that are necessary in the care of the patient. Provide information and communicate as needed with referring physicians.

  • Coordinate and act as a sub-investigator in clinical trials. This includes preparing and submitting forms to the IRB, enrolling patients into studies by completing health assessment and physical examinations, reviewing lab work and diagnostic tests and making changes as indicated by lab results while following the protocol. This also includes potentially discontinuing a patient on a study for reasons of non-compliance or other issues.

Attend clinic meetings and other meetings with program leadership.


Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.

Three years of related clinical NP experience preferred. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Current with CME education requirements and HIPPA training modules. Adheres to all education standards and practices as mandated for MLP by the State of Maryland and compliance with The Joint Commission and other regulatory standards. Attends regularly scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures and health care plans and protocols.

The provider’s scope of service will include managing patients with sexually transmitted infections, HIV, HCV, providing PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV), wound care, and substance abuse disorder. The provider will work in multiple clinical setting settings in order provide unique entrance points where patients can access healthcare. This will include working at the BCHD STD clinics, at the SPARC Center, a women’s drop-in center and the BCHD mobile clinic (The Spot). Medical care will include obtaining a medical history, performing appropriate physical examinations, assessing patients’ problems, and resolution of identified problems by appropriate medical management. Duties and Responsibilities: Provider examines and evaluates all new and return patients and documents findings. This is to include, as needed: medical history, physical examination, written orders for chemotherapy, diagnostic tests, and review of results of bacteriologic and laboratory examinations. Implements protocols for treatment, monitoring adverse effects, and emergency procedures, recognizing that the condition of individual patients may occasionally require a medical decision to alter certain aspects of these protocols. Completes all forms requiring the attention of a clinician, i.e., insurance, vocational rehabilitation, social services, automated information management input documents and abstracts patient records as required. Provides consultations, makes patient referrals and arranges general hospitalization with appropriate medical care providers. Participates in in-service training and supervises clinical training of approved students and physicians-in-training. Participates in research activities authorized by JHU and BCHD. Counsels patients, providing disease information about treatment, prevention follow-up care, sex partner referral and contraception as appropriate. Performs related tasks as assigned. Provides Emergency Services to the Department as needed. Works with BCHD outreach and Disease Intervention Specialists to identify, locate and attempt to re-engage people who have been out of healthcare for HIV/HCV/STDs.
