Summary

Nursing Service has a position available in Surgical Services for a full time Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP).
Responsibilities

The NP will execute position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care for Veterans receiving care through Surgical Services as an ICU and surgery clinic NP. The NP meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions and consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

The NP handles conflict and problems constructively and appropriately when dealing with customers and coworkers. The NP will work collaboratively with residents/fellows /physician staff. All medical documentation will be done in the Computer Patient Record System (CPRS). The NP plays a key role in management of patients seen in the SICU, surgical wards, surgical clinics, operating room and other interventional areas.

The NP uses sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating patient care; applies current evidence-based concepts and findings to clinical practice. S/he shares clinical expertise with professional and support personnel, accurately documents and reports, identifies/ analyzes/resolves patient care problems whose resolution results in the significant improvement of care to patients, and demonstrates such expertise in patient care so as to be recognized by others.

Responsibilities may include:
Making morning rounds with surgical teams
Participation in multidisciplinary rounds.
Serves as ICU liaison between primary attending surgeon-surgical team and Surgical Intensivist
Facilitates tasks including but not limited to scheduling surgery, performing physical examinations, prescribing medications, initiating consults, requesting lab studies, X-rays and other imaging, and interpreting diagnostic test results
Evaluates new and established patients in Clinics, Emergency Department and in the hospital
Works with Social Services to arrange post-discharge continuing care and treatment
Assists in discharging patients and providing instructions for follow up and continuing care
Provides "on-call" coverage as needed as determined by Surgical Services
Performs preoperative risk assessment for surgical patients Work Schedule: The NP will be flexible to meet both staffing and administrative needs and this includes evening, weekend, holidays and off-tour shifts.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Additional Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner Positions:
Master's degree in Nursing.
Prescribing and dispensing authority required.
National Certification as an Acute Care NP.
BLS per local facility policy.
ACLS certification required. Preferred Experience:
Three (3) years clinical experience with evidence of good clinical skills.
Prior surgical services or applicable experience.
Evidence of progressive leadership activities and successful participation in Nursing or Medical Center activities/committees.
Ability to easily establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships and communication with physicians, staff, patient, and significant others.
Working knowledge of Joint Commission standards and Nursing Standards of Care for ambulatory care patients.Demonstrated ability to perform duties in accordance with VA and Joint Commission standards.
Evidence of patient teaching/education and critical thinking skills and performance.
Demonstrated ability to perform duties with initiative and independence.
Demonstrated ability to independently and collaboratively make patient care decisions.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Possess basic computer knowledge and skills with proficiency in preparing reports/documents. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements:
You must be able to perform work that requires regular and recurrent bending, lifting 45 lbs. or more, stooping climbing, reaching above the shoulder, stretching and similar activities supporting various weights; walking and standing for 8 hours; frequent pushing medication charts, wheel chairs, litters, beds; use of fingers both hands and both legs; emotional stability (you must be able to care for Veterans with various medical and psychiatric illnesses who at times may exhibit unpredictable behavior and may have the potential to be physically or verbally aggressive); near vision correctable at 13" to 16" far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other/both eyes required with ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing aid permitted in order to sufficiently hear various alarms and respond immediately.
