Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities

Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.Uses critical thinking skills to assess and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs.Develops and implements individual plans of care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment.Evaluates patient's response and modifies plan of care accordingly throughout the patient's stay.Participates in activities that promote safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities and Qualifications Provides direct and indirect patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse consistent with the established guidelines of practice, the Goals of Mercy Health System, the Philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, the Code of Professional and Business Ethics and the Employee Code of Conduct. Performs clerical and billing functions for the department, including answering the phone, transmitting messages to the appropriate individual, processing new and changed orders and acting as a liaison between other departments. Acts as a receptionist for the Nursing Unit. Enters, updates, and retrieves information from the hospital computer system(s). The billing function will be performed on a daily basis. Performs related duties as assigned. Activities include but are not limited to general nursing assistance, inventory and supply management within the area, housekeeping duties, records management, laboratory assistance, computer data management, and clerical duties. Routinely interacts with patient families, medical, nursing, and ancillary staff, and persons outside of Mercy Health System. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards. Exceptional communication skills in face-to-face encounters with other health professionals and the public. Able to function effectively with newborns and new parents. Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Meet unit specific physical demands. May be required to work differing shifts, days of the week, or work frequency according to patient care requirements. High risk exposure to blood and body fluids. May be called up to transport items to different areas of the hospital. Equipment Used: Unit Specific: Assorted radiant warmers, isolettes, cribs, ventilators, oxyhoods, pulse oxymetry, cardio-respiratory monitors, IV pumps, phototherapy, computers, and other NICU/NBN equipment as necessary. Responsibilities: Instrument Responsibilities 1.1 Clean equipment, instruments, supplies. Reusable equipment, instruments, and supplies are clean per manufacturer's recommendation and/or hospital policy. Presoak equipment, instruments, and supplies with enzymatic solution. Disassemble all removable components of instruments, supplies and equipment for leaning process. Clean items with hospital approved detergent. Disinfect items as required by chemical disinfection. 1.2 Prepare equipment, instruments, and supplies for use. Instruments and supplies are assembled, labeled and prepared for sterilization. Equipment is assembled and/or disassembled for use such as cords rolled neatly and/or pumps separated into components. 1.3 Coordinates with various departments for distribution, receiving and handling for equipment, instruments, and supplies. Follows policy for transporting clean/soiled items. 1.4 Ensures instruments, equipment, and supplies are in good repair inspect and replace damaged or broken items. Maintain repair process with contracted vendors. Maintains a clean and comfortable environment to include: 2.1 Assists in keeping desk and NICU clean and in good order. 2.2 Provides for needed items for patient room and NICU area. 2.3 Assists in keeping support areas clean and in good order. 2.4 Provides needed supplies/items for patient comfort and care. 2.5 Restocks patient rooms and work area. 2.6 Keeps area clean and in good order/completes daily/weekly/monthly cleaning. 2.7 Provides needed supplies/items for patient comfort with conserving cost. 2.8 Prepares patient care area for admission. 2.9 Checks, maintains, and cleans equipment as determined by Nursing Service/Unit policies. 2.10 Performs required daily quality control monitoring. 2.11 Monitors and restocks chart forms and paper supplies. 2.12 Picks up and delivers equipment, supplies, and other items in a timely manner. 2.13 Sets up admission beds using established protocol. Performs clerical duties 3.1 Greets family of patient friendly and courteously. 3.2 Greets all customers at the nurse's station with a positive attitude and directs them to the appropriate individual or location. 3.3 Keep printed reports from fax and copier flagged in patient charts for nurse/physician. 3.4 Keep fax and printer with paper supply. 3.5 Obtains prenatal and referral hospital records and puts medical record together. 3.6 Logs in all patient record per protocol, e.g. Prenatal Records, lab test, consents, and referral hospital records. 3.7 Admits patient in the Patietn Access and NICU computerized systems. 3.8 Runs charges through the computer. 3.9 Places patient label on all forms as directed, both sides if required. 3.10 Performs clerical duties to assist in the maintenance of patient records and documents. 3.11 Performs clerical duties to enhance the efficient functioning of the department. 3.12 Answers the telephone in a timely manner and received multiple phone calls efficiently. 3.13 Enhances patient care through prompt notification of patient needs to the direct caregiver. 3.14 Assembles admit packets, education packets, NICU/NBN Baby Book etc., as needed. 3.15 Keeps census records current. 3.16 Assembles charts verifying all records are obtained. 3.17 Maintains knowledge and skills related to computer/printers/fax/tube operation. 3.18 Relays and exchanges information, contracting, scheduling and coordinating activities with other departments and ancillary staff. 3.19 Demonstrates knowledge and use of team assignment, physician and nurse call schedule and other schedule information. 3.20 Enhances patient care through prompt notification of family need to the direct caregiver. 3.21 Gathers appropriate data. 3.22 Prepares all records and other pertinent patient information for transferring patients. 3.23 Assists with transfer/discharge process. 3.24 Is compliance with bar code scanning. 3.25 Logs in and Discharges patients from HUGS system. Assists in supporting patient care activities to include: 4.1 Performs Quality Control duties and documents in the QC manual as assigned. 4.2 Transferring patients. 4.3 Transporting patients. 4.4 Cleaning instruments, rooms, and equipment. 4.5 Thoroughly cleans and re-stocks room after each patient dismissal or transfer. 4.6 Assists with infant transport to other areas. 4.7 Delivers appropriate specimen(s) to lab. Scheduler Duties: 5.1 Schedule procedures of NICU patients in conjunction with RN. 5.2 Catalogue all prenatal records, reports. 5.3 Prepare patient chart for all scheduled procedures. 5.4 Assist RN with pre-procedure calls. 5.5 Assist RN with scheduling post discharge appointments and assignment of pediatrician. Budgetary Awareness: 6.1 Plans, organizes and evaluates work activities appropriately. 6.2 Works efficiently and quickly producing high quality work. 6.3 Conserves resources and brings forward ideas for better ways to complete work. 6.4 Reviews and enters charges correctly. 6.5 Is responsible to staffing needs.
