  • Provides emergency room-like triage evaluation and management to women presenting to the Women's Pavilion OB Evaluation area, as well as midwifery care to women in the Labor and Delivery Unit and Outpatient clinics. Participates in the care of these women and collaborates with obstetricians and gynecologists, other nurse midwives, residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and other members of the health care team. Follows accepted guidelines for the practice of nurse midwifery at Franklin Square Medical Center.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Education/Training

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nurse-Midwifery.

  • Experience

  • 1 year clinical nurse midwife experience.

  • License/Certification/Registration

  • ACNM or ACC certification. License in the State of Maryland. CPR certification.

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Basic computer skills preferred.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assesses and evaluates patients and develops, recommends, and/or implements, a plan of care for obstetrical and gynecological patients in accordance with accepted departmental guidelines.

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and revision of nurse midwifery protocols and standards of care.

  • Completes history, physical examinations, laboratory tests, and fetal monitoring and other diagnostic tests as appropriate. Communicates findings to collaborating, supervising, and/or private obstetrician/gynecologists.

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

  • Documents all clinical care and procedures performed in a thorough manner, ensures that documentation occurs immediately after patient encounters, and ensures compliance with hospital policies for medical record documentation. Documents information to be used for patient billing in accordance with department and hospital standards.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and committees. Participates in meetings and on committees as requested, and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Provides other nurse midwifery care within the scope of nurse midwife practice. Initiates emergency care as needed.

  • Provides patient care in the women's pavilion including ordering and evaluating diagnostic tests and managing of obstetrical and gynecological complications. Works in collaboration with supervising and/or private obstetrician/gynecologists. Collaborates with the health care team in planning and implementing care for obstetrical and gynecological patients.

  • Seeks consultation according to nurse midwifery protocols from all members of the health care team involved in patient care and makes appropriate referrals. Provides consultation services as required by the health care team.

The Nurse Midwife is a health care provider working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team, responsible for providing comprehensive obstetrical and well-women care to both ambulatory patients and inpatients. The CNM educates and intervenes in the antepartum, intra partum, and postpartum continuum. The Nurse Midwife practices within the guidelines of the department, and the Institution in accordance with the Nurse Midwife Written Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland. The Nurse Midwife is granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital; these privileges are renewed annually. The Nurse Midwife is responsible to the preceptor and department head for nursing standards and practice. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: OB/GYN Clinic: Provide urgent and non-urgent care to antepartum and postpartum patients through one-on-one patient visits or through the CenteringPregnancy model. Order appropriate labs, ultrasounds and consults as needed. Initiation of contraception for postpartum patients (IUD-insertion and removals, OCP, Depo-Provera, etc.) Evaluation of gynecologic problems, including abdnormal uterine bleeding. Perform office procedures such as endometrial and vulva biopsy. OB Triage: Covers Labor and Delivery. Provide emergency/urgent care to obstetrical patients throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Assess, evaluate, and implement treatment. Intrapartum: Completes history, physical assessment, admissions, frequent evaluation of labor progress and interventions as needed. Management of labor and delivery, including possible complications and repairs. Postpartum: Evaluation, intervention, and care of postpartum patients. Provide appropriate teaching, education, and information with postpartum care. Alost assists with lactation and family planning. Circumcision: Circumcising newborn babies in nursery and NICU. Education: Serve as a resources and educator of medical and nursing students and residents. Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in Nursing. Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Midwife. Must be licensed as a Nurse Midwife in the State of Maryland. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the Bayview and Johns Hopkins Hospital credentialing process is required prior to start date. CenteringPregancy certification preferred; will provide training to become certified, if needed. Additional Requirement: Bilingual required. Must speak Spanish, fluently.
